Technics SL-23

Seems like a nice choice AT440. The Shure is like a quarter of the price, at Larrys price that is. I could afford to go either way at the moment really, even the AT150. I'll take warmth over absolute transparency.

I can live with this, as is, for awhile too.
 
The motor for this TT is located between the spindle and the cartridge at rest, so that the cartridge is directly over the motor when playing.

To me, this doesn't sound like a good idea.
 
Depends on how well shielded the motor is. Some went to great lenghts to make it a non issue.

Yeah, might be an issue with some Grado's they pick up hum like white on rice, I've never had a problem with them, but many folks have.
 
I was wondering about a basic MC on this table. I've read that heavier mass tone arms are often a requirement. I think most Technics use the 5.6 gram headshell, or similar. My stock headshell is 9.5 grams, and I have enough travel to compensate for the heavier or lightweight headshell. Do you think I would be fine to put on something like a Denon DL103 MC cart without the need to add mass?

Good Q Joe, I'm afraid I can't answer it, you should have a heavier arm and the required counterweights for all that mass on the other end. This works and sounds much better on a pivoted arm, something about physics and all that stuff.
