Apparently the guy has serviced a bunch of tables. He changed out some caps to correct speed control and put on new belt, stylus and RCA's. I don't know what cart, as I'd likely change it anyway. Asking $100, seems worth it.

Thoughts?

And Nando, that table of yours is pristine and awesome looking.

Hi Joe,

A serviced turntable of that generation for $100 seems more than fair. Good luck on the purchase!

I'm the 2nd owner of the Pioneer PL-570. I appreciate the comments guys.

Nando.

PS What are you going to use as a phono amp?

The Spec 1 has a great phono section, I'll rotate the Grant Fidelity in and see how it does too.

That's the kind of hardware I love to see, Lee. You brute! I haven't tried a stand alone phono preamplifier, but I've been told my LP recordings sound fine through my present Pioneer Elite C-72. I wouldn't mind trying a dedicated phono stage box to see how it would compare, though.

The Grant with the Chinese tubes were nothing to write homew about, BUT, with the matched set of Sylvania's from what used to be my Dad's collection, did it right.

Good to know, Lee. My dad passed down tubes to me too, but I haven't taken stock of what he gave me.

These were the only 4 tubes to be passed to me after he went through 2 girlfriends and a second wife after he and Mopm got divorced. When i last looked in the garage as we left California in '72 you could not have hauled away his tube collection in the back of his pickup. And he was as packratty as I am, God knows just how many of what tubes he had. He was a lifer in the Air Force and had access to a lot of that kind of stuff. Scopes, sig gens, and heaven knows what else lined one entire wall of the garage from floor to ceiling, A LOT OF TEST equipment. And a quartz-atomic clock(his description) that he built. Oh to have had some pics of that stuff knowing what I know now.

Got it.

He didn't do a great job on the new RCA connectors as one is loose internally and will obviously need re-soldering. He probably loosened it when he was up plugging it. Nasty hum on that channel until its positioned properly, not a big deal I can deal with that later.

As you can see (kinda) it's in decent shape. The cartridge is an AT-70 I think, which is conical, not close to high end -and definitely not as bright as my other table with the empire.

Honestly its dramatically different, and a huge leap forward so far in quality and definition. I keep leaving this post to spin something else to make sure I'm not being deceived by some unrealized issue. The same Debussy/Bernstein record I listened to this morning was not just better sounding tonight, it actually has three dimensions. There are instruments there now where there was only tonal sounds, and there is energy in the concert hall that moves along with the orchestra, yet separately, which is obviously intended to invoke feeling, and it does.

I'm sure as I listen to more recordings, I will find more faults. When I listened to a Jazz recording that had Bobby McFerrin singing on one track, it seemed something was missing. Possibly the other setup may have exaggerated something and in that case was pleasing. The sound of this new (old) TT/Cart is a bit laid back, but maybe that's how it should be-to a point.

I've been told and read many times that vinyl should sound "warm", and only my memory as a kid listening to my dad's old tubed cabinet stereo suggested that to be true. After having many different TT's over the past year or 2, some new, some used, I began thinking that I would completely abandon the idea. But finally, I am starting to think there is something more to be had here.

While I don't speak as someone who has had a lot of good experiences with vinyl and turntables, I have had a lot of good experiences with 2 channel systems and critical listening, and in my opinion, yard sale fodder or not, this turntable is good.

I just hope it lasts :clock:

Nando suggested to me once when i was questioning my test gear that I had the finest test gear ever made on the sides of my head. In the end Joe, if it pleases your ear that's all that really matters................BUT............as that ear hears something else................
