Interesting session with the meter, tray opened, closed, disc spun up .....backwards. Reversed meter leads, still spun backwards. Took jumper out and it spun the right way, YES.......I checked my wiring, it was RIGHT. HMMMMMMMM..............

Those are my spacers to stack all my PL amps. After 5 or 6 high they start to wobble without spacers accross the heatsink fins.

Lee, now that is a strange one, you must be special or something! ;) Did you happen to get a current reading for the 7805 even so?

Maybe tomorrow late afternoon I can take my CD apart. In the morning going with my brother to get a tractor north of the cities.

yeah robert, .202 amps max, jumped between that and .107.
Doesn't sound like that is out of line..... Did you happen to note what the input voltage to the regulator was? You could also check the ripple and for oscillations with the scope.

No i didn't Robert. I was tapped into the harness right off the spin motor even before the Servo board. I will check the input to the reg tomorrow and slap the scope on it, Thanks, appreciate the help.

Hi Lee,

Here are some test results on my CD-3, sorry for the delay:

Power Supply Board:
CD100B_Power
2003-04-25
0607

Room Temp: 20.2C

Fluke 61 Infrared Thermometer

Regulator Left/Front = 46C
Regulator Middle Front = 58C
Regulator Right Front = 41C

Regulator Right/Back = 41C
Regulator Right/Back +1 toward Front = 41C
Regulator Right/Back +2 toward Front = 40C
Regulator Right/Back +3 toward Front = 36 C
Regulator Right/Back +4 toward Front = 44C

Deck was run for ~ 60 minutes while playing CD, top covered.

I think the heatsink for “Regulator Middle Front†is not large enough or that section of the supply is close to the edge. If you have a slightly warm room or run for extended periods of time I am betting you will exceed the 70C rating of commercial parts.

There also did not appear to be any heat compound or heat transfer material between the regulator IC and the heatsink. I almost want to pull the supply and install a larger heat sink in mine, but just not in the mood for that at the moment.

I haven't ran mine long enough to know if it heats up or not, but that would explain the problems with the units.

  I got the room kinda cleaned up, I had one of my strong as an ox buds come over to help get that huge CRT TV outta the house, the stand it was on is what I need for the Onix. Then I can have everything out in the open on the left side of the room.

Dale looked at the pics and thinks that regulator is too close to the power supply area and if it's getting too hot, it's under heatsinked like ya'll said, and that a small computer fan over it should work as a quick fix as long as it doesn't add any noise to the circuitry near there.

Stuwee, Is your Onix going to make it before the holiday weekend??? I am very interested in hearing what your comments will be.

After a couple weeks with the Onix I still really like it. Not a smashed CD to be found since it arrived! Still can't believe that a CD doesn't have to sound like total crap.

We'll see when it gets here! I don't have any smashed Cd's I always took them as an inferior source, and didn't let it get to me. You're a musicain so I could see where they would bother you in a crappy CDP, I'm very excited to see if my experiance matches ya'lls! I suspect it will :D :D :D :D :D :D
