It has been decided by decree the Stu should have an Onix CDP. The price point being established already by two previous sales, he'll be expected to pay when he's in the chips again, kind of a reverse lay-a-way. The said contraption is now being tested one last time.

Yep, gotta plug the Spec rack at every opportunity. naturally the first one I picked is the one with power supply problems, time to switch it out.

OK, still not sure about this CD-2, think I can detect some wow and flutter?? Is that the correct term for Cd speed variance?? One of the voltage regulators is getting very hot. Web and rtp, if yours start doing this let me know would ya?? A schematic would be a godsend, if i can't find one soon i'm just gonna shotgun the power supply.

Lee, is the power supply a linear or switching type??? As you know if things are getting hot a bunch of current is going someplace that it likely shouldn't. Are the voltages off from the others you have? If you can find part numbers for IC's we can run down datasheets that should help in solving the problem. I have not pulled the cover on mine and likely won't have time until maybe Sunday.

They're linear Robert . the -5 volt regulator is the one getting hot. When you lift the lid I'll show ya which one. Pretty straightforward. There are 2 relay driver trans that might be sucking up some juice.

Can you seperate the supply from everything else, check the voltages, reconnect the pieces one at a time? That is the process I tend to use if possible. It gets harder if things are all on one board, or no schematic as you have noted.

In the stuff I have messed with over the years one did not usually see relays driven from negative supplies. Usually the negative supplies tend to be for biasing, op-amp power, etc. It could be the negative supply is used for some motor control things..... Do the x-sistors driving relays you mention have a flyback diode?

As usual no real clue what I babble about.
