I'll only point out one more thing and I'm fine with dropping it. But, I think it should also be noted that after the Civil War, the flags were taken down. And, their reappearance on state buildings occurred during the early 60s as a reaction to desegregation laws. So I think it is not entirely unreasonable for people to see a flag born as the symbol of the racist institution of slavery and resurrected as a protest about racial desegregation as having some racial overtones. That is not to say that everyone who flies it believes in such nonsense. But, I think it explains how people who have a visceral reaction to the flag have come to see it as a symbol of white supremacist beliefs.
+1. I see that filthy excuse of flag flying in my neighborhood, it's going in fire after I wipe my bottom with it.

Well Doug, you just made me realize there is a reason why I try to stay out of threads like this. I like you a lot man but somehow I feel dirty thinking what I do about the flag. I am not a racist but now I feel like I look like one

I would advise against coming onto my private property and doing that regardless of what flag I'm flyin...

I grew up in Clay County, Missouri, part of what was once known as "Little Dixie." My brother and I could be members of Sons of the Confederacy if our great-grandfather's service were documented (he enlisted under a pseudonym (long story)). Most importantly, I have unlearned most of what I "learned" in the government schools. Given all that, I recommend that you all read "The South was Right," by James Ronald Kennedy and Walter Donald Kennedy. It will take you way past the History 101 level of the Civil War, etc.

Sure, you can read a smattering of Confederate apologists obscuring the fact that slavery was one of the central issues in the Civil War, or you could maybe instead go back and get it straight from the horse's mouth, where you had statements like those shown in the following link with Confederate leaders directly naming the conflict over slavery as the central issue in the rift between north and south.

And I can't resist also mentioning that you now have the KKK holding a rally to support flying the flag at the state capitol in South Carolina where it was pulled down. And racial anger is boiling over into a new series of black churches on fire in the aftermath of all this, 6 since the controversy has erupted with at least 3 confirmed as arson. Like I've said, I'm completely willing to believe some people care about this flag who aren't racist. But for a lot of racists it is absolutely a symbol they hold dear. To pretend this is not the case is ignoring a whole lot of evidence.

Here's maybe a better read on the causes of the Civil War. Of course, the Federal (mis)government, and their media running dogs (the Atlantic, for instance) will never drop the slavery angle, as it suits their purposes. It's much like the way we're all taught in school about the evil Missouri forces under Quantrill, who killed so many unjustly in Lawrence, Kansas, BUT they never mention the Kansas forces who did the same in Osceola, Missouri. Real history tells a different tale if you look at the situation as a whole, for instance, looking at more than a narrow, selected group of writings by Confederates.

My only comment is when I see the flag it makes me think of the Dukes of Hazzard, Rednecks, Pickup trucks with Gun racks and Guys with thick Southern accents missing a few teeth. :toothy5:

That said I think it is shocking that any state, county or city in the US would allow the confederate flag to be flown on public property especially considering what the flag was a symbol of in the past. I have no problem with private individuals using or displaying the flag if they wish though.
