Would you buy a speaker you never heard? This is a very loaded question.

Do you think you could and read reviews in the forums. Read the x-over design and the x-over points and almost hear the speaker.

This speaker is going to be a hard speaker to get the sweet spot. They say once you do. It is well deserved.

How I found these speakers. I was just in Auidiogon looking. I go there when I can't find it on E-bay. I was just looking. I was burned out looking at B&Ws. So I was just looking and these speakers reached out and caught my eye. So for a few days I read. I made an offer. I didn't stick to it. I paid what he asked and shipping he asked. I couldn't do it. There are times you can go low and go. There are other times you can't do it.

Well the DVR is on pause. And I gotta go. LOL

Larry, why do you keep looking at and or buying more speakers? Don't the ones you have sound good enough?

Anywho, yes I have bought a few speakers without hearing them first. If the speaker is in working condition you should generally be able to determine what they will sound like by reading up on the specs. I have seldom been surprised or disappointed when buy new speakers. In my experience if you are buying quality speakers they should all sound acceptable within a small range. some you will like better than others but they should all sound acceptable as long as they are similar designs. You wouldn't expect a bookshelf to sound the same as a floor stander, but in their own worlds they both should sound fine for what they are. :cyclops:

LOL the Vandies are the 1st speakers I have bought in over 5 years. So get off my back jack. LMBO How many pairs do you own? I did redo the Normans. I would love to have the money to build a pair of Epiphanys though. Different systems different speakers. I hope this is my last system so maybe my last speakers. I go through more sources than any thing. What you say is true. I made that decision this am. Get the decks working and keep what I want. I am tired of buying.

Thanks for the advice Web. LOL

I think most of us are on the watch for our Holy Grail Speaker,,,I think I made a major Blunder by gifting my SB7000 As,,to a (friend ) who needed a system,,,,The HPM 100s it bought to replace them were allright,,but were sold to make room for something else,,The Advents had Great High and Mids but lacked low end,,,the Marantz Imp 7s, I rebuilt from Junk have proven to be real sweet and get better with age,,,I,m always on the search for THE speaker,,but don,t know if I,d make a major speaker purchase especially a highend speaker knowing what the price is Plus Shipping as most High end speaks are 60 plus lbs each and we all know what UPS or Fed-Ex are capable of doing during shipping,,FF

The 12s were about 7,000.00 The 21s were alot of money because you would have to buy 1000 drivers @ 17,000.00 plus tarrifs and shipping. Then every thing else The ribbons were almost 40.00 each.. So you are looking for a pair with the capability to build more at about 35,000.00.

Larry

PS You can afford it. Plus the use of the X-over free if supplies bought from Danny

Yeah, maybe your were just talking speakers and not buying? I guess there is nothing wrong with buying used speakers, trying them and then flipping them for something different later on.

As for speakers, depending upon what counts as a speaker, yes I have 7 sets maybe more? :cyclops:

Usually I keep a pair a long time. I do need to sell a pair. I don't know which ones really though. They all have their attributes. I would like to try the new ones out on the PL. They aren't very officiant. None of mine are though except maybe the labs. I'm thinking hard with just a very simple system to try them.

I have a hard time evaluating the speakers because of all the variables, such as equipment synergy, room size, type of music played etc. So yes I pretty much hang on to the speakers. It is too hard to pack them well enough to survive trips so if I want to divest I need to do it locally.

I would never spend huge coin on a pair of speakers I couldn't audition. Even detailed specifications on speakers wouldn't be enough to enable me to judge how the speakers would sound. If there were enough testimonials by people, and not, necessarily, audiophile-type listeners, I could narrow the field. I know how Lee loves the sound of Ohm Model F speakers, as he had owned a pair brand new. He and I have similar expectations from what speaker sound we prefer. Those would be speakers I would consider buying, provided they sounded the way the factory designed them. But, I would still have to listen to them, first. Testimonials would be just a method of determining which speakers make the top five within my budget.

I am not that fussy. A good speaker like good wive takes a little while to get used too. In my mind most speakers of a specific type within a similar price to my ears are going to sound more similar than different. Sure there will be some differences, but like high end cables in blind test I wouldn't be able to distinguish which sound goes with which speaker. I guess it depends on each individual listening though.

I've have strongly considered buying a pair of AudioNote speakers and building them without a prior audition. I haven't dismissed the idea yet. With cash in hand, I would buy them, right now.

I knew I would love the sound of Yamaha NS-1000's without ever hearing them. I bought a pair about 20 years ago without hearing them, and yup I love the way they sound. :thumbright:
