Lee Those caps in series should be good for 200 volts but half the capacitor values

Re: Some Toroid Transfoprmer Questions!!!!

Correct, that is what I thought you wanted, a higher working voltage on the caps...

If those are the 22K uF caps Lee, then you will have an 11KuF cap at 200V with this configuration.

Ok, some where else I had read that. When the time comes I will get 150 volt caps then. Parallel those eh??

Lee, You could also series-parallel anything above 75 volts to get the cap values you want

Lee
I recommend you get the right working voltage caps when using electrolytics. Electrolytics that large in value often do not share well due to leakage in one cap being larger than the other. Measure each end to the intermediate bus bar voltage to ensure that they are close in your present setup.

Re: Some Toroid Transfoprmer Questions!!!!

That setup was only being used to check rectified and filtered final rail voltage. They were on for about ten minutes is all. Apex Jr has some 35,000 @ 120 volters , so I'll be getting some of those.

On a side note, was working on another local 400, had a fried BR(positive diode) and a shorted positive power supply cap. It's the first PS cap I've run accross that was actually shorted. What do ya suppose the failure mode was,. BR first, cap second??

Was it the original Phase Linear 5900uf 85V cap Lee or was it the GE 7300uF 75V cap?

Probably cap first, what size fuse in the transformer primary ? BR should be good for at least 25 amps

Re: Some Toroid Transfoprmer Questions!!!!

Cap first Lee would be my guess. If the bridge went first and put AC on the cap, it would have vented. The fact that the cap is shorted and not vented provides the evidence that it failed first.

Phase always ran these caps too close to (or over) the limits. Derating actually works :)

Yep, a factory 5900 85 volter. What would make the bias on a stock 400 drop like a rock when you apply a load, low gain on the 3403???

Re: Some Toroid Transfoprmer Questions!!!!

What does drop like a rock mean Lee? Are you driving this with your signal generator when this happens?

Or does this mean that with no signal input you attach an 8 ohm load to the output and the bias drops? If it is the latter then I suppose I would look at Q10 or Q11 as having low or no gain.

Re: Some Toroid Transfoprmer Questions!!!!

Joe loaded up and with the AP running a THD & N sweep. Negative rail is 200mv LESS than the positive rail. Bias starts at 425 an drops to 310 when loaded and testing./ The negative rail starts at 330 and winds up around 200.
