I'm very curious about any tech item
#1
Hi all ,
now I would like to buy a RTR deck ( Revox A77) and here in Europe it's very easy to find
good units and all the spares , but what about the tapes ?
If I have understood well now there are only two manufactures :
Recording the masters ( based on Basf and Agfa technology )
and Zonal ( based on Ampex ) .
Any suggestions ?

Ciao
Marco

Thank you !
Any way at present iit's only a dream and I want to get infos , because lately
I bought an Akai 8 trak recorder , a Tandberg TCD 320 and a Project TT .
I believe that for me it's better to keep calm .
Another consideration :
my opinion is that a RTR deck is like a Porsche 911 .
The price of the car ( RTR deck ) is quite cheap ,
but after the fuel ( tapes ) are very expansive both NOS or new .
Ciao
Marco

Great analogy Marco :geek:. The machine is almost free, the cost of ownership will be expensive. I don't think I need to tell you, get the best tape you can afford. Owning a big Revox RtR will pay you back 10x's over using good tape :toothy10::toothy10:

It's the truth : a Revox A77 + 10 x 10.5" plastic reel tapes is approx. 700 € and with metal reel tapes is 1000€ !!!
Perhaps it's too expansive for doing on a whim . I have decided I should to sleep on it and to listen to music .
Ciao

Broken beyond repair but highly affable

Not to rub it in but my A 77 cost me $130 from a member of TH and was fully repaired before he sold it to me.

Not that I had waited over 30 years dreaming of one from the daze of watching the automation at our local radio stations.

No such things as bad days, just bad moments

Regarding Revox R2R's.

I read recently the availability of commonly needed parts is drying up. It made me speculate that since Revox's are popular, the many buying "as is" decks have depleted the spares reservoir.

I think I will buy ( in the future ) the speakers for my father's Yamaha CA 2010 for approx . the same price .
A pair of Klipsch Heresy should be the right choice ( 700€ ).
Ciao e grazie .

This was my finding also. When I searched for a new head for a PR99 which was said to be all around I found none and ended up putting a used one in that was not that bad. This then places the Revox product in like the Akai product and with no heads what good are they? A lot of people use Akai decks with worn out heads in them just go on believing the lie that they do not wear out- check them with an alignment tape and see what happens.
Yes. I contacted AM Belgium and not only my contact was gone but so were all the heads.
