Here's my current setup! I just got the upper unit back from a complete repair and refurbish, and had the bulbs changed to blue LEDs while he was at it. (They're not quite as blue and dark as the iphone camera made them out to be). I actually snagged that unit off of craigslist, and it was a wreck -- broken spindle, someone had "adjusted" all the tape heads, the auto reverse didn't work (in fact it only played in reverse), the tension was ALL wrong, and the pinch roller arms were bent. Sent it out for a repair, and got back an amazing machine. It was a test to see how the repair guy does with reel to reels, and I must say I'm quite impressed. The lower unit is my dad's 707, which needs some work, and I didn't want to send it out and risk it coming back all messed up. So I got a real piece of crap for next to nothing, and sent it out. And the machine I got back was awesome, so I'm sending dad's out just as soon as a make a couple of dubs. Didn't want to send out something with such emotional attachment without knowing it'd come back right.

That being said, I also had that receiver serviced by the same guy. He does great work.

This room has a Pioneer QX4000 Quadraphonic receiver, with 4 baby advent speakers. It will eventually have just one reel-to-reel on the shelf (dad's), and the blue one will be moved downstairs, and mounted into a rack with my Phase Linear gear. I built all the bookshelves and the stereo cabinet here, and all of it is attached to the walls. So I can do jumping jacks while the turntable is playing!

I also had a RT-701 that I inherited from my father. I was a fool and sold it. I figured the 707 was the better machine. The 701 worked, and needed nothing. The 707 had several issues. Back when Dad died, I wasn't into vintage audio.... so I let it go for a reasonable price. Wish I had it back now. The 701 was a very quiet machine, and a pleasure to use. Very very simple machine. Wish I could find the guy I sold it to. All I know is I sold it in 2008 to a guy that lived in Chapel Hill, NC. :/ I'd buy it back in a heartbeat...

Charles.
That is a beautiful set up Charles. Your shelving unit looks top notch and it housing a lot of nice gear. Having that close attachment to your father makes the gear very special - he left you quite the system. I remember when quadrophonic systems were very popular but that really didn't last long - too bad as it did provide a nice sound stage.

Have you had a chance to browse through the latest PL 700 upgrades? There is so much you can do to improve them and there are a couple of very capable guys that can make that happen for you if that is something you're interested in. Thanks for sharing what you have!

Oh - I almost forgot.

I've been told I need a WOPL for the PL, but I've not found any information on what it actually is, or if I can install it myself.

Graham: Close to indestructible and much more akin to studio equipment. Do they get much use these days?

ChopperCharles: Double 707s - nice compact system. Very nice hand-built shelving to accommodate your set-up. Does the Pioneer receiver have a quad simulation feature to imitate 4-channel surround?

My former open-reel decks!

Well, I no longer have open-reel decks but used to have the best in the market. From an old Sony TC 560D to a Studer A 80 1/2". Take a look.

Technics 1.jpg Otari 1.jpg

Besides these 2, I used to have: Revox B 77 MK ii (2), Revox PR 99 and Studer A 80 1/2". Sooner or later I'll have to buy another one as I have over 100 10.5 tapes here that I need to use. I'm thinking in a Crown deck this time...just for fun! You can check the rest of my collection at my website: http://mortechpr.wix.com/cassetteadventures#!faq/cx79

Enjoy!

They get used all the time. These things are just about as good as it gets with good tape. These are Studer A80RC MKII studio recorders.
They were both ex BBC London machines.

Indeed. Simply the best. I used a A 80 but 1/2" in my mastering business, but it had the Meter Bridge and a variable speed control. Never broke down! I sold it to an studio in New York 6 years ago.

Enjoy!

Here is a list of the current decks:

RT-909 Pioneer
RT-701 Pioneer
RT-1020L Pioneer
A-7300 Teac
TC-4x Teac? (one of the first 4 track multi-sync decks prior to 2340)

The Pioneer decks have been gone through and are working great. The Teac A-7300 has some wear and W&F issue, debating what to do with this one.

The Teac TC-4x deck is currently on the bench. A long time friend recently return this deck to me as I previously owned it while in college.

Prior Decks:

RT-1020H Pioneer
A-1200 Teac (parted deck, looked nice but not worth fixing)

Future Decks:

I would like to have a TEAC 3440 and or a 44/48.

Here's the current home studio setup with a Tascam 38 and a Teac 3440. A Revox PR99 is over in the stereo system (this is an earlier photo from the current setup). I've had two Pioneers - an RT-1011 and much more recently, an RT-1050. Long time ago, I had a pristine A77 Revox; sold it to acquire a Sony SACD player and wish to this day I had it back. I've also owned a Tascam 32, it's now with a happy owner in Austin, TX and the RT-1050 is somewhere in LA (lower Alabama). Rumour has it there's a Tascam 85-16 nearby but it will need a ton of work...

Plenty of nice open-reel decks being displayed. The last few posts by Bob, Robert, and Carlos show that there is indeed an undying affinity to this format of analog tape.

Bob: Any recording projects slated for the studio this spring and summer, or out in the field?

Actually, things are perking up a bit on that front, Nando. A friend of mine who is the Education Coordinator at the Creative Discovery Museum here in town told me today she wanted me to capture some gospel groups that are going to be performing locally in May. She has some project going that dovetails with my documentation of local musicians, so I'm about to get the little Marantz cassette deck, three mics and a mixer out and about again.

And I've been practicing some this winter - doing several remixes of some recordings from a year ago of a friend who is a songwriter. Playing with differing amounts of reverb, compression, panning things differently and listening to the different versions and comparing the changes in the different versions to themselves and to music I consider a reference for what I do. It's kept me off the streets and warm this winter.

Unfortunately, those outboards aren't mine. The University got a donation of an entire big-time recording studio a while back and I've been testing bits and pieces from that donation to see if it's feasible to set something up on campus. So far, nothing has worked as it should and my repair/installation/restore budget keeps growing while funds and a place to set things up on campus remain non-existent. Everything is back on campus in storage at this point.

But they do look good in a picture.

Current tape machines I have are a Pioneer RT1020H and a CTF-950 Cassette deck. Compared to
a CD player they are more difficult to use but I like them! And yes they do look better than thin CD
player.

Own a couple of these silver beauties and took a lil vid while I was testing some of the functions before putting it in the system a while back.
