Joe, looks like it might have spent some time on he road. Could have been a place to hang a support strap??

The sticker on the back of the transformer case indicates an RF filter was internally installed and the case seems like it bows inward. I prefer the strap idea better tho...

It's the one in the ebay ad . I don't have it yet, but for $250 I went ahead and bought it without researching, not very smart I admit. Is this a Series I? Is it unusual to have a blank face plate with no meters? I am not very knowledgeable on these; I remember them back in the day having meters on the front.

I did an image search for the 700 with a no meter faceplate. Yours is the only one showing up from what I see (when I hover the cursor over the images, it says it's an eBay image). Could be someone did a heck of a job making a custom faceplate for it?

There was never a stock 700 Series I without meters. There are a lot of Series I meters around because they hardly ever failed. I can even get ya brand new ones...

The more I look at this, the more it looks like someone in the past put another manufacturer's faceplate on this amp. The extra holes sort of point to this posibility and probably a few other holes were drilled for the power switch and whatever. Or maybe this is a PL prototype faceplate that never saw production? All kinds of possibilities

But looking from the rear, it looks like a 700? I have never owned one, so I don't know what to look for, but I remember "back in the day" I really wanted one!

Good, I'll go ahead and get it. How can I determine mfg date? I wonder how difficult/expensive it would be to put on the correct front plate and meters?

You have come to the right place Lad. Skratch is making a limited run of replacement faceplates ,anodized, and then cnc'd for the lettering, and the meter cutouts to fit 400 meters, gonna be real slick. PM--Skratch.
