It's about counterfeit plates, that's it.
I for one and sure there are others on here would like to see the so called original
Clair Brothers 400 faceplate that Tony says "a gentleman set to him" to use to make these 400 series II faceplates.
Does a Clair Brothers Series II 400 really exist? That would be cool to add to the archives.
Just Askin.
I wonder where all the purple faceplates are?

I don't see why you aren't allowed to take a skill you learned doing something and make a job out of it.

Really, it wasn't D.T. was it?

PS this is still a politics-free day here

As for a picture of the original 400 series 2 Clair Bros. faceplate I have never taken one or requested one.
Like I have stated before with my eBay messages I can get anywhere between 30 and 50 easily a day.
Most of them are from people that want one offs.
I receive messages all the time from people telling me they have one offs Proto types first runs that need a new face plate or does not have a face plate and I'm always sorry to tell them I just cannot make one offs the cost is just to expensive. I get this from all manufacturers of audio equipment.
The messages I do tend to pay more attention to are the ones that say they need a quantity of them.
For instance this gentleman "PL 400 series 2 Clair Bros" happen to send a message just as I was getting a large plate order together and there was still some room for some more.
His message stated that he had a phase linear 400 series 2 Clair Bros silver that he wanted 6 done in black laser etched.
I thought nothing of it whatsoever and it happened to work out perfect because that's how many spaces I had left in material.
I did not ask for a photo because I told him I would need his original plate to scan it to me the reproduction of his plate.
I do not know enough about phase linear for it to raise any type of flag if this was a rare plate or anything else I only know what I've been reading here I am a Marantz collector not a PL collector if this would've been a rare Marantz plate I mediately would've known something about it but it sounded just like another standard 400 plate to me and because I have not done this plate for anyone else I had no questions about it for him.
The only pictures I have are production pictures I was sending him of the process of production of his new plates I sometimes put the old plate next to the new plate but that's only when I'm matching anodize color but in this case his plate was a silver-ish gold plate and I was making him black plates.
After laser layout was done sometimes we do end up with enough room for a plate or two which originally would've been scrap but in this case we ended up with enough room for two more plates.
His plates were the last on the set up for material so it only made sense to cut the last two in his model instead of paying an extra costs to reprogram and cut some other model up, so I did.
I contacted him to let him know that there was an extra two plates that I could given at a very discounted price that would've been scrapped but happened to work out he did not want them he said all he needed were the 6 for what he had and that was it.
I asked him if he didn't mind if I sold these two because I didn't want to step on anyone's toes in case he was reselling is. He said his plates were for him and had no plans of selling what he had and it was fine with him for me to resell the other two. So that's how this all came about.
Sorry to the mods if this thread has caused any discomfort. Thanks Tony

But you still have a counterfeit one up for sale on the bay. Can we ask that you remove it and maybe offer it at a super discounted rate so we can get it off the market?

Look, there has to be a better solution to this.

1. If you have an issue with an item on eBay, take it up with eBay.

2. Can the nomenclature be removed? It was a nice looking product otherwise.

3. The matter of the non-reproduction clause is one for a court of law, not the forums. If anybody would have interest in the matter it would really be the last IP holders, Pioneer.

4. I understand that Perry didn't want any copies made for gain or otherwise. There may well be no premises to make that assertion though. Perry never owned the design of the PL faceplate.

The real remaining issue is that Perry feels betrayed and that Tony should have not added the non-existant nomenclature to a reproduction for a model that was never produced that way. He could make it purple with polka dots if he wanted to, it's the heritage of the product that is causing a rumble.

Yet they also make fake porthole vents for pickups ala Buick.

You shouldn't have to buy that item just to take it off the market, even if it's a matter of extreme pride to you.

This should be a matter for eBay though.

Mistakes were definitely made and the member apologized. He has offered to cease making them. Pursue that avenue, get the final plate out of circulation and let's get back to boring for awhile.

I thank a member who explained it better to me and this was my attempt to offer mediation.

I understand Perry's feelings about this. It should have been handled more externally or with less anger though. Jerry is right, he created this site and it's rules with Larry.

Thank you, Steven

It would have been nice to see it since it would be an important part of PL history. Looks like just the 700 was changed to 400

Maybe you could ask the gentleman if he would like to join the board and share images, if anything just to document they actually exist despite at least one former PL employee knowing nothing about them. These amps obviously mean nothing to anyone who does not have an appreciation of Phase Linear history, the WOPL version is the Ultimate homage to the originals

Ebay does not care. Already tried that. And, they would not try to pass a pickup off for a buick.

It's not about pride, money or anything else. There is no guarantee that these amps will not make it to the marketplace in the future. The Clair amps are collectables (In my book they are), and somebody in the future may get duped. It's that simple. This degrades the guys amps that bought these for the sake of being Clair amps which there are a very small number left in the whole world.

It's not about ME!!!!!! If I have to BUY the bogus faceplates, I will. and then I'll do a video of me destroying them. It's that simple. Just be cause I can paint like Picasso, does not mean I should even as a novelty since some unscrupulous turd will try to pass it off in the future and a dummy will buy it thinking he could get into fine art for $50......

Whether it's counterfeit or not is still open for debate. Because Ed hasn't seen or heard of them does not mean they don't exist. Phase was notorious for lousy documentation. Tony says he copied an existing plate. Is it up to him to verify the unverifiable?? I mean Christ, if THE PL GURU can't say for sure , then I would say, back to your corners until further developments.
Logic would suggest that if Clair had racks of amps that they would be 700's , just for the fact that when one went down they could switch over on the fly. Perhaps they had some super efficient horn arrays that only required a 400.......maybe it didn't work out?? Who knows....perhaps an old Clair hand will stumble accross this thread and enlighten us all some day......

Until then.........be cool....

TMZ2, hope you will continue to use your expertise to supply plates to the community. Stick to the standard PL plates and all will be well. Thanks for all you do. Fred.

I would "like" this if the option were available
