Tape 2 green light stays on no matter what source tactile switch is pressed. Tuner switch will not stay on but sometimes sets up what sounds like relay chatter or bounce with Tape 2. CD plugged into Tape 2 works but not when plugged into AUX. Pressing Tape 2 will extinguish any other Source LED also lit.
The CD player is the only source device connected although I want to also use the Phono 1 or 2 (MC or MM).
The Operating Manual refers to amber LEDs associated with the Source switches, but none appear.
Is this a serious problem or an economically feasible repair for a qualified technician, which I am not?
Any insights gratefully received.

The 3000 is a bit finicky. Any dirt that gets inside the switch assemblies can cause false triggering of the IC's. You will need to squirt some cleaner/lubricant like LPS1 sparay or one of the Caig Laboratories De-Oxit products.

Phase Linear 3000's with the earlier relays will also create problems when trying to switch from one input source to another. In other words, when you try to change say from tuner input to aux input and both LED's stay illuminated when only one should.

Phase Linear had the problems with the clear see through topped relays. Remove the top and bottom covers on the 3000 and see which relays it has in it. These were replaced later on in production with yellow topped nitrogen gas filled sealed relays with gold contacts (Aromat HB2E-DC24V). Early 3000's had (13) relays. Later units had (14) relays. Some units had (6) or (7) replaced. Later units had all (13) or (14) replaced. The 14th relay was added to later units to help prevent feedback loops when using (3) head tape decks.

If my memory serves me correct, Lee may have some HB2E-DC24V relays available?

I don't have any spare HB2E-DC24V's left.

I stopped buying 3000's years ago. The math just wasn't working out. Let's see.... I wouldn't ever want to spend more than $50 for a used 3000. Add the cost of (13) or (14) relays at $10 a piece. That's another $130-140. Now you are into it almost $200 before you even begin. You may even need to replace the power switch. You'll need to disassemble the front panel and check all the Molex connectors, spray and lubricate pots, switches, etc. De-soldering the relays from the double-sided pc board is a pain in the ass. Replacing the relays alone will take around 2 hours. Add bench testing time (using the 3000 service manual) to ensure its meeting factory specs, etc.......

After that is all said and done how much would it fetch on ebay?
Don't forget to include your time taking pictures, writing ad copy, packing properly.

Once all the maintenance is done then it's a good pre-amp. The key I believe is to buy used 3000's with all HB2E-DC24V relays already installed.

If you are keeping this for yourself then its a different story. If you want to purchase the relays they are available on ebay for around $10 each.

"Doesn't take long to get more into em than they are worth for sure." Hey, that sounds like everything I own! Maybe I should buy a couple!

I see you can get the relay's @ $6.75 if you buy a hundred.
