Regardless of your opinion of Stereophile magazine, the October issue contained a real gem. Pages 187 and 202 tell about finding well over 1000 reels of unreleased tapes that were recorded by Owsley Stanley. From what I've read, he was a REAL purist (minimalist?) when it came to setting up microphones for his recordings.
The first release is a SEVEN CD set by Doc and Merle Watson. I'm currently making my way thru all 7 discs and so far they're incredible!! The recording quality is superb and the music is incredible, provided you like this type music. It's been a long time since I got that "You are there!" feeling from any live recording. Cost was around $90 for a 7 disc set. A bargain! If you get your hands on a set, be sure to read the "liner notes."
Please visit the website even if you're not interested. This will be a LONG ongoing project for several years.

- 1968 Carousel Ballroom show by Johnny Cash
- Miles Davis at the Filmore West in 1970 when opening for the Dead
- 1968 Dr. John opening for Thelonious Monk at the Carousel (Monk tapes are lost)
- Toots and the Mayals playing for Mick Jagger's birthday
- Sounds like there's more by Jimi Hendrix, more folk music, reggae, etc.
