For now my soluion is a simple one. Cloned th C: drive to an identical one and replaced it. I do that twice a year regardless and it was due. Skipped the update and sent it to hide.

Go look at your installed updates and tell me what you see. Then see if they enabled automatic updates again against your wishes. If you're using 10 do you have any choice?

Win7 pro here. Doesn't seem to be an issue. Auto update has always been off and when I told this update to hide it stopped asking like any other.

btw I do a few extra steps to help prevent issues. Stop netbios over tcpip. Insure all the ports are stealth and no response to ping.

If you rely on Windows Update to download patches, your particular system will governor the parsing of what gets applied based upon your unique configuration ... and what is already present (available) from prior manifests hanging around.

I finally managed to get some tips on what kernels to delete, got rid of only two, all the updatesa finished after so many months and the Intel microcode update worked...FF 57.0.4 WORKS in Linux Mint...they really ruined it for Windows. Should I reinstall to win 7?

Still using Quigley (Linnea) with no reloading. For the moment I've set the Fourth Doctor Tom Baker as wallpaper until I find that image of Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers again

I ran the updates I was delaying. The largest was 230 mb or so. Don't see any noticable problems with speed, but I don't think they offered the update that was causing problems, for my win7 machine...yet.

Trust me, Web knows this computer some, he sent it (Alison, HP Pavilion I7-1111)...

It's maybe two-three years newer than my MPC ClientPro 385 with a Core2 1.86 GHz dual core and that puppy had no problems once I figured out a couple old Linux kernels I could remove with the advice of somebody on the LM Blog (I couldn't update anything until I did that anyway). Now I've got to change a stupid hard drive that I somehow encrypted and can't format in this computer.

The only other problem I've had is that the cable for the card reader doesn't combobulate to the connector on the board where I believe it's supposed to go.

I was promised another long ethernet cable to be able to run both instead of constantly swapping (they haven't brought it yet, two months plus) and by God I have a life and other stuff to do before I expect snow again next week.

I've been fumbling with these stupid Microsoft patches that supposedly address the current CPU 'mess' and all they do is *^&# up my computers at some point.

I've got a lot of functionality back except that my WEBMAIL seems to have become zombitized and a couple newspaper sites and Yahoo are trash (Y! already was anyhow).

Meanwhile at some point last night I gained a non-existant D: drive with 0 bytes and no free space that Windows wants to FORMAT nonetheless and can't of course, nothing in UEFI or Device Manager...I'm sure it must be related to a Windows Update but so far System Restore hasn't tackled it and you cannot remove what isn't there...

I do have a missing device driver AGAIN...same one as usual.

But I need to go into the Linux machine again and see why I have a flashing red power button.

All my base has heart disease or herpes or something right now. No Medicare for computers.

select storage/disk management , then unassign the drive letter from the drive... disappear

Nope, I believe it has decided to call the SYSTEM PARTITION a drive.


I'll try again for the sake of trying though...who knows?

I don't see how to unassign the letter, it's the system partition as well and All I can see right now is to remove or format it (neither is wanted, I'll lose the disk).

Am I removing the LETTER or the PARTITION? The latter would be catastrophic, the former perhaps a formality.
