Jer, since metal tapes need higher voltage to record and erase properly, that might be why you hear a slight drop if it's a situation like Tom said. laws of physics, if the slight bit of crud is raising the tape off the head, it's not able to get the signal 'thru' to it on the metals. Just my 2 nickels.
