New to the site but not vintage audio

A friend of mine got a new power amp in 1980, might have been a Bryston 4B, and it didn't have a power switch. The point was leaving the amp on at all times to avoid expansion/contraction from heating and cooling. At least that's what I read in the owner's manual.

The same philosophy as in leaving your computer on all the time. Careful with that though: close TCP and UDP ports to prevent intrusion.
I don't leave things on because I see it as an invitation to a house fire.

I should be even more of a smart ass than Lee and quip "that's what my PL4000 preamp is for" :-)

Seriously I do use it for that. It is not in the audio path but it is in the power path. Nice that they put all those switched and un-switched outlets on it.

I do like the on off switch myself so much so that I'm gonna make a new top plate and add a on off switch for the amp and one for the LED's set up that I'm making up for the meters so you can turn them on and off at any given point. it's nice to have things lit up and not have to have the whole unit powered up. I like to be in my audio room with everything lit up even if I'm only using one piece of equipment. Just love the look.

I have two 30 amp breakers serving the big rack, so everything is on. I just go to the breaker box and light up everything at the same time.......I don't even use the 700's switch...which is a good thing...they're pretty cheesy..BTW...it does dim the lights for a wee bit...
 
Joe's and Lee's solutions are perfect .
I use Joe's solution for my father's systems ( PL 4000 + 400 and PL4000 + 700 )
and in my system ( Carver C4000 + 2x M400 a ) I use Lee's solution with a remote controlled 16A relay .
However after 35 years I had to clean contacts of PL 4000 relay using #600 sand paper ( in both units ).
Besides 16 A relay is O.K. for Europe .

my system is more complex , because it has two operation modes :
audio or video
In audio mode C 4000 is the master preamp while in video mode Yamaha DSP E 492
becomes the master preamp .
Yamaha DSP E 492 is an AV amp with only 3 power amps ( center and rear speakers only )
I have connected Yamaha's front outputs into the external processor input of C4000
I have also used two external relays powered by Yamaha AC switched outlet to operate
external processor input and to switch the rear speakers from C4000 to Yamaha .
In this way with only one remote control I'm able to command :
-C4000 + M400s power on/off
-Yamaha ( volume , inputs ,Dolby modes , etc .
-Tv
-Vcr
-Blue ray player
-Dtt decoder
-Satellite decoder
-Living room lights .

PS: my remote is very cheap ( 29€ only ) , but it has the " learn function ".
It's Meliconi Digital 6 ( an italian brand )
