Thank you Gene. googling a dim bulb tester now. I guess it's not like rebuilding a Heathkit SB-220. 73, KJ4LAA
better late than never!!!!Welcome! I wanna fix up a boat anchor one of these days……
go to hifiengine.com....download free pl400 service manual...they list suitable replacements in troubleshooting....they do say to "match" outputs...ie. use same transistors in each channel.....as watts would tell you...read and reread the service manual...Thank you Gene. googling a dim bulb tester now. lolololHUH????
I built my first HW-101 in 1982-3 when I was KA3KOE. I rescued several SB-220, SB-200, SB-230 and HA-14's that I want to restore. One of these days I'll get to them. Yesterday I saw something shiny and cheap (PL400-Squirrel!!) and jumped on it. I'm heading to Lowes and get the parts for a Dim Bulb Tester. The 100 watt lightbulb might be a challenging find.hw 16 ...my favorite ...

I think DIY is still alive and well in amateur radio. Either fix old crap, build a TruSDX, or mod your ic-706mkii into an all bander. Or build antennas cuz those are expensive
Ran to Lowes and got all the goodies and built my Dim Bulb Tester. I may incorporate this with my isolation transformer and a variac as well. I have some 100W incandescent light bulbs on order, although I did test it with a 3-way bulb (50w-200w-250w) and it appears to be working. If you have ever watched Mr. Carlson's Lab on YouTube, he has a nice current limiting variac setup hung on his wall. Thank you so much for the tip. Some of us can get by with using the Variac. Some can't. You just have to be smarter than the knob.
Unfortunately, they are no longer accepting new accounts so downloading is a no-go.go to hifiengine.com....download free pl400 service manual...they list suitable replacements in troubleshooting....they do say to "match" outputs...ie. use same transistors in each channel.....as watts would tell you...read and reread the service manual...
Thank you!!!See attached.
