Hi Guys
I'm new around here trying to figure things out . I have A C-1 Preamp that I interested in doing the BillD mod and Gundry filter and the power supply upgrade that WOPL sniffer did on the C-1. I bought My Phase Linear 4000 series 2 and 400 series 2 New in 1979. the 400 is still working good. the 4000 preamp 1g channel has no output also thinking of upgrading it also.
Any Info would be apricated Thanks

I have a 4000 S2, getting a bit flaky here and there. I’ve been inside, upgrading would be a nightmare. The PK unlimit and autocorrelator are great circuits, really bring more life to LPs. A lot of techs won’t touch them with a ten foot pole that they’ve rented somewhere, and a few guys here don’t like them, mainly for the backplane and daughtercard architecture. Solder cracks on the backplane connectors can be the issue or so I’ve heard, so a good place to start would be to reheat all those joints at the connector, hit them with a squirt of DeOxit, see if that helps.

I think that overall it’s a great preamp, but the manufacturing design has some problems.

Uhmmm… get a DC protection circuit on that 400 ASAP!

Mark Comer is correct, the Phase Linear 4000 Series II preamps can be a problem, although they are a vast improvement over the original 4000 with the joystick. No tech I know will work on those boat anchors. I tried, and found many solder cracks on the RCA Jack connections and the "motherboard" connector pin interfaces. I re-soldered them and tested the unit - it was perfect. Then more broken solder connections occurred during the return shipment.

I really like the Carver C-1, I think they went downhill from there except the C-19, that was Carver's Flagship Preamplifier. Buy it if you can find one.

This is the right place for Phase Linear and Carver folks.

I’m from California. We have been emailing back and forth about my 200 series 2 amp and You did My Wopl board for My 400 series 2. Haven’t worked on the 400 yet waiting til after I finish the 200. You have been such a great help on everything thank you so much.

I have a C4000 and it sounds great for me ! Anyway its setup is difficult due to the spedial functions ,
expecially Hologram and delay time unit.
