Well, methinks I got a deck "that doesn't piss me off" (need a trademark for that). Surprisingly, it's a single capstan 3 header. Teac V-2030S.

I believe it was born in 1997 or so. Personally.. I think that makes a difference when it comes to finding "the one". Less wear on the heads, I'd say.. less wear all around. I put it on the bench tonight and dialed it in, and I will have to say - it's "in there". I think what else helps is having Dolby S - not for it's own sake, but the fact that when Dolby S came out, it mandated that decks with Dolby S capability be equipped with either automatic or manual calibration facilities. This one has a manual cal routine, but the result is still the same - dead on bias and record levels.

Where's that travelin' tape?? I'm ready for it.

If I ever see a good price on it's big brother, the V-8030S, I just might nab it...

Looks like a nice deck. I have looked at that series of decks quite a few times. :thumbright:

Yep I was looking at a V-6030S I think it was? Sompin like that? :D

Yep them Sony XR Tapes are some pretty darn nice tapes. :thumbleft:

I had a Pioneer with Dolby S in the 90s but iot was stolen.

I only had one S NR cassette and it was some Madonna cassette single on her Maverick label. I've never seen it since so I think it was in the deck.

About Madonna?

I lost a Sony SRF-42 AMAX AM STEREO/ FM STEREO walkman radio, my first VHF Hi-FI (RCA and a nice one), a Sangean-made Radio Shack frequency synthesized multiband radio with mono cassette recorder and stereo headphone to patch into my stereo and they DID slice my recliner's side some where I found, oddly enough, A $20 BILL.

The loss of gear was tought than the loss of a Madonna tape and it may have gotten chewed anyhow.

I don't remember a lot about the early 90s unless I see my videotapes on Leno, Conan, Friday Night Videos, Night Tracks, Fridays and Night Flight.

Cool Jer!! I hope to get the Denon sent to ya later today, I've just been so damn busy, it has Dolby S too, no real manual bias and level adjust, Auto with a fine tune, but you can see/hear how the S works played back on another deck when it gets to ya.

My big Teac has S too, and the Denon plays them back flawlessly, and the other way around. I'm not much of a Dolby fan, but if you have to use it S is the best!

So Stuwee.how do the Denon decks fare? I have a DR-M22 and just bought a DR-M34HR which should be here by the end of the week. Both are mid 1980's decks and both are three headers. I just don't have anything to compare them to, and can find little on the internet about them. I've not popped the lid on the 22 but isn't it and the 34HR direct drive? I think they have low distortion numbers and do have the Denon pedigree,...I hope they are good decks. I know that the Yamaha will probably blow them both away..

I also read on the net the other day...that the reason Naks tapes played on a non-Nak deck sounded less than stellar was because Nak used a different EQ curve than all other manuafturers....Is that true? Very interesting if true...

Larry says the Yamaha K-1000 is ready to ship back to me and that he was able to change the tire on it, and I don't know what else. I just hope it does it for me...and I know it will if it does it for Larry..

I may have to sell the decks that are not THE BEST and try to pick something else up, like a Sony or a Tascam, or =n Aiawa, or maybe even a Nak.....oh dread.....

So tonight.. I plop in one of the Phoenix Blues... and fall into serious audio bliss. Dare I say I like these more than metals? hmmm.. could be! Very tight bass.. crispy cream highs... damn, this is good stuff.
