Well, methinks I got a deck "that doesn't piss me off" (need a trademark for that). Surprisingly, it's a single capstan 3 header. Teac V-2030S.
I believe it was born in 1997 or so. Personally.. I think that makes a difference when it comes to finding "the one". Less wear on the heads, I'd say.. less wear all around. I put it on the bench tonight and dialed it in, and I will have to say - it's "in there". I think what else helps is having Dolby S - not for it's own sake, but the fact that when Dolby S came out, it mandated that decks with Dolby S capability be equipped with either automatic or manual calibration facilities. This one has a manual cal routine, but the result is still the same - dead on bias and record levels.
Where's that travelin' tape?? I'm ready for it.

If I ever see a good price on it's big brother, the V-8030S, I just might nab it...
