Right now my system sounds good to me. I'm sitting here trying to get it right in my head. Really I wasn't writing about synergy. If you came to my house to buy a pair of speakers. You buy the speakers. You won't buy the speaker cables because wire is wire. You get them home and listening to them. They don't sound the same. Are you going to complain to me? You bet you are. The SUM of ALL PARTS = the Result. It isn't the Sum of some parts = result. See to my way of thinking. I try to keep as much AC out of my system as possible. Now here is where people get upset with me. I DON'T care what all you have in your system. It is your system. This is being said as my way of thinking. I like knowing what you have. It just doesn't rank up there on the same scale as the water bill is due today. You list your things and I do research on them. That is how I learn. Now for the faint of heart don't go any further. You will get upset. LOL

Now let me get this way of thinking. Wire is wire! But you will spend 300.00 for another electrical box to make your system sound better. Electrical Box = Reverb, Equalizer, Active Crossover. To make up for the room dynamics? MYTH I would be working on my base components and what is between them. I do put some electrical boxes in there. I try not to. I use DACS because it was built to do one job. I don't use it to modify the sound to compensate for the room. See I don't grasp that concept at all. Yes I roll tubes. I am not adding more to my system. I'm using what I have to do it. My room compensator is the volume knob. Let me state for the record. I DON'T care what you use. It is your system. I'm one of these people I can find good in any system. I don't tear systems apart. That is like work. I'm listening to music. I have been working on the Cary system for over a year. I hope I can say I have spent wisely. The preamp I may have gotten a little crazy. It is taking me so long. I am looking for the best sound for me. I have a base the Carys. Now the CDP. I have the TT and the R2R. Don't have a deck yet. When I swap out. It isn't so much of sounding better it is different sounding. The presence is different.

I know my components. With tubes it takes awhile. I can picture in my head all most everyones systems in my head. If you posted a pic. That system goes with a name. And I picture you jamming. I would like to kick it with Graham one day or a week. I have played with some of his toys. Very Cool.

Let me finish now. At some point you stop getting major changes. You start hearing subtle changes. Me and synergy have a problem. I can say that has synergy and in 10 secs change one variable then it has better synergy? To me for a component to have synergy it can't get any better. If it can then it don't. If you start putting things in your system and are still getting big changes you need to work on that base. Sometimes you have to leave that comfort zone. I'm not harping I'm just saying. When you hear the kick cymbals and can almost see how far apart they are you are getting definition. To me that is a new sound. You may already have it. That is a good thing. Are you confused yet on my thinking. LOL We all listen to different music in different ways. When I'm building a system I have a sound that I want. I have it in my mind what it is. I will tell you what. Bring that Classe amp to my house there is room in my rack. I'll put it to good use on the Vandys. LOL Like I said I can find good in any system. I haven't cranked it in a long time. Nothing I do is by accident. It don't just happen. No magic at Larry's house. LOL

Larry,
I agree with what your saying. The sum of all the parts equals the result. That's how I would describe synergy. Things working well together, and it doesn't have to be perfect.

So true, you can build a system and really like a component. Then sell a part of it to someone who doesn't have the same result, because the end result will be different for them.

I like your approach to things here and I feel that you add value to the community. It's not important at all what people own, but it's important to make sure that we are having fun, help others to accomplish goals, learn and teach.

As far as Myths go, people find there own based on taste and preferences so it seems. If a tree falls in the woods and there is no one there to hear it, does it make sound?

Has anyone here tried hanging minerals or types of rocks on their AC cords or IC's? Apparently there is an audience for that lol. :hippy2:

Capacitor synergy does exist.
There are many measurable parameters on the dielectric used in capacitors that is well known and characterised all the time by engineers. Even more data is being collected in this space all the time, driven by the capacitor use in very high frequency 10Ghz+ serial data transmission applications. Many of these characteristics are too subtle to be properly noticed by the gross measurement techniques that most audio gear is measured by, such as frequency response flatness or IM or harmonic distortion.

There is also large mechanical synergy between a fine tone arm and the cartridge that gets mounted to it. Some combinations are sweet, others sour.

I took me quite a few evenings and dedicated experimentation to discover Cognac sweetens the sweet spot by about 3 dBs.

And herein lies the crux of the biscuit, tis the apostrophe!!

Synergy

Here goes from a mechanics state of mind on the issue. I'm sitting here partaking of things made in the good ole USA. I'm trying to think. I was taught it is right or it is wrong. There are no gray areas. You do with what you have. A favorite phrase is make it work. You work with what you have. I can see me with a 30,000.00 part telling my lead. This one doesn't have the synergy. I like the other one better. I would be put on paid leave till my pee test comes back.

If I am rigging or testing a part and I can't or it doesn't go into specs that I have. It is a bad part. I can't say this one works better with this set up so I will use it. It has synergy. Don't even ask. If you have to fudge something you better be able to explain very well why you are fudging.

If it can't be explained and measured it ain't happening. Explain I mean in a formula or a law of physics. It ain't happening.

Ok let me ask. Did the Shanling win the shoot out because it had synergy with everything in my system? Or was it because it is a better deck? Show me a formula to measure synergy. Show me a synergy meter. PFM is meant as a joke. When I picked the parts for the preamp. I picked all my parts so their wouldn't be any synergy. I picked parts so it would sound good in any system. I have read the definition a few times. I'm not one for titles. If a certain CDP sounds good in a certain system that is cool. It sounds better. There are 100s explanations as to why. It may have been a Monday. They may have went with a different solder in the middle of a run. As long as it falls within certain parameters on the bench it is good. Until it can be measured give me a tolerance for me to go by. I have been ask on rigging jobs. Why did it work so good. It was just something in the mix that day. When I did the rig it was close to a standard day. I preloaded them to the max for 24 hours. Now if I had a hard time doing it. It is usually some dumb a&^ didn't know what they were doing and I had to fix the mess ups. You will never prove synergy to me. It ain't going to happen. I don't think that way. Yes I guess I could make what you guys call synergy by matching parts.

This is the last time I'm going to talk about this subject. I have read a few manuals in my time. I have studied Elec. for 2 years and Avionics for 2 years. In all my adventures I can tell you that word was never uttered in a sentence. If anyone that worked for me ever answered a question with the word synergy. I would have said WHAT first. Then he would have lived a life of hell as a mech. That probably would have become his nick name. This is me. This is my thinking. If it is in your world. That is fine. To me it just sounds good and I'm on my way. No explanation or title needed. It sounds good. I'm not saying anyone is wrong. I'm just saying I don't think that way. I laugh when you guys use the word. I do hate the word. That is OK that is my problem not yours. LOL You guys chat on.

I'm still wondering what those little Japanese blocks of wood do?

WHAT ARE THOSE JAPANESE BLOCKS OF WOOD SUPPOSE TO DO? I had a guy tell me one time. If you put a pyramid on top of your speakers it will focus the music more so it will sound better. LOL I went right out and bought some. LOL He was going to help me by getting a mill to make my speakers boxes. I got wood. Never any that totally was what I sent as a design. Got 4 boxes and could not make a full speaker out of them. Then I get a bill for them. Yes I shipped them back COD. LOL
