That was the volume pot too.........if you have destroyed it(no need to ask how I know) I have a few....sort accross the pot wiper to the unmovable end on each pot, do not try it with an amp that does not have pots...

Could I possibly run a double preamp to jerry-rig a set-up since I don't have an amp with pots to control volume? Will also try to double check my soldering connections and some of the other pots I messed around with like the balance.

Regarding the balance pot. When I go mono, I have to keep the balance in the middle. If I go all the way one direction I lose both channels. Is that normal operation. I never tried mono on the is unit till after the clean up

Yep the balance control attentuates one channel while leaving the other alone. so one way you lose everything but not the other way..

So do you think I maybe installed the input selector switch incorrectly. I desoldered and disassembled that also to clean. Looking at it now, I can see that maybe the two rotary pieces might have not been oriented appropriately. Is there a way to bypass that to try and rule it out? Thanks

Yep, one row one channel, the trace side of the board, the front row and back row. Follow the traces from the output. That will be the common. Then jump to the other inputs...

Jumped the input selector and both channels are working fine. Now the question is what is wrong with the input selector. The two wheels that control left and right can only go in two different ways. Pretty sure I tried all combinations and re-flowed the solder joints. Other than that the inner workings received a good spray de-oxit to clean metal contact.

Pretty much the exact words I said to myself when I was putting it back together. Sometimes I can't help but tear things apart to see how they work.

And yes it is a 2000 series I. The jumper I made is from two inside points to the two points one in from the farthest outside which coincides with Aux input. Without the jumpers only the right channel works but if I put my ears close to the left speaker I do get some sound bit doesn't change with volume adjustment.

With the jumper it works as it should

Are all the little touch pads rhat follow the disc still in there?

I believe they are all in there. When I from apart the switch I just unscrewed the actual switch and slid the bar put from the two wheels. I then sprayed the depot into the holes of the plastic and rotated wheel back and forth multiple times. I didn't take anything apart further.

I will take it apart again tomorrow. I was thinking maybe i switched the two rotary pieces. I will check tomorrow as I'm doing a night shift tonight

So you just pulled te shaft out? It can be 180 off, if the flats on the plastic disc are lined up with each other the only thing it can be is they are front to back reversed, they could also be left to right reversed....

Good call!! Didn't think that I might have turned one around. I tried rotating 180 already with no luck. Will flip it tomorrow when I get a chance

A quick update on the 400. Tore the unit down to just the transformer a couple days ago. Installed the new bridge rectifier and new RCA jacks and binding posts. The back boards are ready to go in when I get the chance. It's definitely coming together nicely.

Flipped the one rotary wheel around and everything works as it should. The preamp sounds great! Just have a little popping noise when I push the defeat button in/out. Will trouble shoot that when I get the chance.

I don't think I have the "golden ear" but I can definitely hear an audible difference after the component upgrade and the switches area dead quiet after the cleaning. Really looking forward to matching it with the 400
