Here's a little blind testing for you. I have recorded 7 completely different cassettes with a sample from Dominic Glynn's Doctor Who Gallifrey One Remix track, around 45 seconds long.
They are all recorded on my NAD 6100, with the Fine Bias set to -1, and the Normal/CrO2/Metal switch set according to tape. All tapes have been previously used, but don't have significant wear.
Peak levels are +5, you can assume that the loudest samples' peaks are that on the deck. Had to slightly turn down the Line In in order to prevent clipping.
These cassettes are:
A. TDK SA90 1994-1997
B. TDK A60 1988-1989 (Cheaper tape mainly for dictation)
C. Memorex Chromium Dioxide 90 (Sponge Pad) 1976-1981 (exact year unknown)
D. BASF Chrome Extra II 90 1988-1989
E. BBC "Retired" Spoken Book Tape, around 90 minutes long (9 pence from Tapeline, cheapo ferric)
F. Maxell XL-II Epitaxial 60 1985-1986
G. Sony HF90 1990-1992
You can find the samples in this DropBox folder.
The samples from the cassettes are called Sample1, Sample2, ect.
The sample taken from the 320Kb/s MP3 is called Master (no pun intended).
Just post your idea of what sample is what like this: 1-A if you think Sample1 is the TDK SA90 tape.
Can you tell what tape it is what? I am looking forward to the results!
