KLH Model 717

Model 717 will be gutted but the Twenty will be restored because it is a true KLH. 717 was probably some weird experiment with Singer.

717 will get a new TT (Dual), new amps, will try to recap the phono and FM..

There's a Pioneer C 5600D for sale locally for $125 with speakers.

KLH was budget conscious but in the segment of All in ones, they're probably not too terrible! I'm not sure how the Sony HP 601 and the Pio stack up against the KLH Model 20. Pioneer and Sony seem to have a better TT for sure given the force adjustments on them..

Didn't know that one existed. Looking at an example on the 'bay right now. For $125, get that one for sure. Hell, the turntable alone probably brings $400 right now if you put it on its own plinth.

Some more intel on this model. It looks to be a watered down Model 20 in certain ways..

Model 20 has a better PS because it has a class AB amp that can drive a 4ohm speaker (KLH model 20 speaker) as opposed to the 717 which has a basic amp probably is at the max 5 watts.

Model 20 has a bigger transformer and PS caps.

Model 20 uses separate tuning gang caps for AM and FM as opposed to the 717.

Model 20 and 717 use the same Garrard 3000 with adjustable counterweight but the 20 is a 4 speed. Both use the same 4 pole motor.(Probably not much different in this aspect)

Both the tables rest on a spring platform..

The 20 is shielded better...

Idler is a weird one..and went rock hard.
Platter weighs a good bit, everything is well made on the Twenty. Even the coupling caps are also massive..1500uF (the two massive caps bolted on the bottom of the chasis in one of the above pics, seems to be polycaps of some type)

Just finished recapping, cleaning the changer, installing new idler, lubing the bearings, motor bushings. Basically , full service for the model 20.

Sealed PS caps and coupling caps were still in spec but others have drifted.

I bought a model 24 table just to have parts, it has a better condition platter mat.

I also ordered some special bearings and idler from audiovalt_ca seller on ebay, he sells parts for highend Garrard tables. This will reduce any rumble.. I also installed new rubber grommets for the motor mount.

I tested the amp with a 4ohm dummy load and I got a whopping 16 watts before clipping begins.

I am refinishing the cabinet now and I will put it back. It sounds very good..

These seem to be very well made! I highly recommend them if you can refurbish them.. everything is nicely laid out, easy to work on. Quasi complimentary pushpull Germanium stuff...

I will begin the work on model 717 soon..

Unit also has a couple of death caps: line/neutral to chassis so I replaced them with Y1 rated caps.
