Ken Nelson's Phase Linear 3300 ser II Pre-amp

Yep Dennis, they go in last. Not in the way for the other stuff..

Any chance you put that on the AP for a before and after comparison?

I have one of these that I swapped the op amps out based on you recommendation, and I have most of the caps (someday), so I'm curious about this project.

Zach, I did not do a before, but it has published specs, so we can compare to those....

Sweet Lee. She looks great. Bet she sings just as good. Dennis I think I can get it out. Problem would be not sticking something right back in there. I volunteer to play twister with her. :toothy10:

I bet you could "get it out" Ken - good to hear from you again. You must've survived the tornados. Thought about you when those were in full swing. Seems you're getting the full Monty on this rebuild. :!:

We did a lot to this one Zach.

I see that!

Not sure I'm up for the "cap bank" but otherwise, I think I'll be following a lot of this on my own 3300 II when the time comes. Might even try the "cap bank" since it wouldn't be too hard to do on some plain old perf board.

Gotta get myself set up to do some basic distortion testing- pretty sure I've already got the software and hardware (soundcard based). What I lack is the time/ motivation. STILL playing catch up since I graduated. Closer every day...

The best sound card based test system is probably Daqarta, google that.

That looks pretty good. It's certainly cheap enough.

I already own Sound Easy though, and it does most if not all of what I'd want (from a sound card based system anyway.)

I like the coverage of voltage dividers on that site. Very clear and complete.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I was lucky during the tornado season. Had one hit the marina about 1/2 mile from the house. I travel alot and saw the damage in Shawnee, El Reno and Moore. It was crazy devasting. Even some of the places now, the trees have this erie looking appearance. Sure miss being on here much. Wife said I was on computer too much, so ya know we do what we can to appease them. Can't wait to get this beauty. Think I'm going to let Lee play with my Marantz 250 and 3300 too. I certainly want dc protect in the 250. I really like the 3300 but quite sure its not performing as well as it could. Funny how the two preamps have the same number. I havent even hooked up the 250, without dc afraid I'd blow my speakers. Just like when I'm driving with my foot on the pedal, my fingers have the same problem with the volume control. lol

Guess I spoke to soon. Got hit by 80 mile a hour straight winds Tuesday night. Heard a whistling noise about midnight and then a cracking sound and then boom and crashung sound. I jumped up, told my wife come on a tornado is here. i headed to the shelter and she lagging behind, i say come on again, and she says I cant I need to get some clothes on. i said come on I would rather be alive and naked, than dead and clothed. By then the wind had slowed down. Went outside the back door onto the back porch and the 35 ft Bradford pear tree was split in half and had hit the roof over our bedroom. it then fell off the roof and crushed my fence right in front of me. Pretty scary.

When the planet wants to use a toothpick to remove you, yeah, that's sobering.

Its good that you are safe Ken. We don't get anything like that here in this part of Australia near the east coast. We have had cyclones in the past but nothing that has flattened the place. The tropical cyclones up in the north east sound very scary though. You must get a few scares over there to have a shelter, is that an underground "bunker" type thing?

Yes, I guess you could call it that. Mine's metal buried in concrete. 8ft wide by 12ft length. has a rounded top about 7ft high in the middle. Has a bench all the way around it. We took a 4x8ft plywood in the back and put a bed on it. Got it stocked with necessities. Keep my wine down there too. It stays around 55 degrees all the time. Summer and winter whether its 0 or 110 outside.

Damn Kenny, 3 posts in in less than two weeks!!! You OK Bud???

Welcome back Lee, hope your trip was a fun one :) Still saving money and working hard here. Enjoying the audio as much as I can in my spare time.
