An oscilloscope is of use only if you have a decent oscillator. The HP 204 is cheap, plentiful, and relatively low distortion. Digital scopes have their advantages that can be good if you need to capture waveforms. I bought a Rigol 4 channel scope with all of the bells and whistles and sent the first one back because the trace is terrible compared to my 40 year old Hitachi 40 Mhz scope. The second Rigol was the same, I kept it. I rarely use it unless I need multiple channels. A fine, skinny trace can be helpful to see high frequency noise etc.
