I have a Heathkit assembly manual from circa 1968 and in the back is a price list for all the individual parts. Tube prices were less than $2 each.

Bwahaha! Imagine paying that much for 12AX7s when most NOS pairs are 1/10th that price, and there are so many other good ones still being produced.

Prices like that are why folks like Jim McShane are so important to the hobby. He sells tubes but knows them enough so you can get the most from something a little less expensive.
Top vintage NOS power tubes are over 500 each these days. New production isn't the same and some folks have the money for that part of the hobby.
