I've decided I would like to see if I can pull off the rebuild of a Phase Linear 400 Series I on my own..and I need help...I don't know where to start.

I also thought, through this thread, it might be a good opportunity to create a set of instructions, for the novice, who would like to repeat the process.

So, will you guys help? I know the first thing I will need is the candidate 400...and order the things from White Oak, the replacement PCB, the meter light board and lights, and the new caps...has anyone else created a parts list of the other items needed from Mouser or the like? I know I'll need a new 35 amp Bridge Rectifier, and new output transistors, but don't know the part numbers or anything..

I do not own a signal generator, or an oscilloscope, and don't know which one to buy (on the cheap) to get the job done corectly..

Any and all help is appreciated. I will cut and paste all the needed information into a set of instructions for the rebuild of the Phase Linear 400, giving credit to everyone who provides information. I will repost on this site or others, for like minded folks to print in order to provide a set of instructions for anyone wanting to rework their old Phase Linear..

Thanks for any and all help...

Well, ya don't want much do ya?? LMAO!! Hookay, ground rules....

#1---Don't do ANYTHING out of order or until it's understood WHAT is going to be done.
#2----See rule # 1, why? Cause that's where most of my mistakes come from, not documenting what I did and in what order makes it hard to ascertain what exactly happened. Remote help can VERY SLOW AND FRUSTRATING, So don't get that way.

Yeah, maybe I'm thinkin this is going to be somewhat easier than it is in actuality..I absolutely understand Rule #1 and #2 and know the remote help can be slow and frustrating...for BOTH parties....so you think I'm bitin off more than I can chew? My Eyes Are Bigger Than My Stomach? When I was a kid, I did have a babysitter who would say........If you put those brains in a bird it would fly backwards...

Are yoiu saying " Don't try this at home?" "The following was performed by PROFESSIONALS ON A CLOSED COURSE"

If you say don't try this....Won't hurt my feelings a bit.....I'm just really itching to give this a go, but don't know where to start...

My second project is building a space shuttle in the back yard.

There is a Bill Of Materials (BOM) but Joe may not want that shared publicly. Best to get the parts from me or from Lee. We can make sure you get what you need and no extra parts. I could even bend the leads for you and stick them in a styrofoam block, labeled with the values. Lee may have a board he can sell you for a slight markup above wholesale.

I'm sure he wants a populated board, him got bad eyes.
Sutton, let's give it a try. With Mark havin my back we should be able to keep you out of trouble. Mark is probably better qualified to take lead on this anyway. If you put together tube amps you can do this. Mark the BOM is public domain stuff, so we can release it.

I have a Phase Linear 400 Series I secured. Made the deal. Soi I'll be sending the PayPal to the guy this week and should have the amp next week. I do want a populated board to cut down on the amount of soldering. But I need a parts list for everything else. Should I order the populated board from Joe? The led board and cap board? If anyone can give me a parts list for the other needed items, like output transistors, speaker protection circuit..wire...

I have plenty of spade connectors, ring connectors, solder, and the desire..my emil address is ksrigg at gmail dot com if mlucit or anyone wants to send some info directly to me..

Will I need the meter holders like you invented Lee? Will I need standoffs for the PCB? Who do I contact about the protection circuit?

Maybe I should just send the amp to one of you expert guys to do.. I may be getting in over my head..Having NO ONE nearby wh can help me figure stuff out is going to be really a pain..

YEAH..THIS MAY NOT BE THE SMARTEST MOVE....MAYBE I SHOULD JUST PUNT TO ONE OF YOU GUYS, BUT I KNOW EVERYONE IS SO BUSY AND WANTING REBUILT PL'S...

To sell it! I think it works fine. My customer asked me to choose for him between a Hafler DH500 and a Phase 400 (no wood case). If someone has an offer I can let him know when it comes in.

So for output devices I would need 4 ON Semi MJ15024G and 12 ON Semi MJ21194G ? Is there any need to order extra for matching or in case of a mess up? I'm trying to put together a Mouser order of stuff I'd need to redo a 400 SER I, but don't really know what all I need. I would order the PCB, the LED board and the cap kit from Joe. Or should I order the storage caps from Mouser? Anybody who will give me some ideas, I'd appreciate it very much.

Yep, ya got it right on the outputs and drivers. PS caps are going to be limited to what will fi. 1-5/8 X 4-4-1/2. Get a populated and tested board from Mark. The LED straight from Joe.

24 Mounting Hardware INSULATOR TO-3
1 Chemicals NON-SILICONE 2oz THERMAL COMPOUND (is there a better compound?)
18 MJ21194G Bipolar Power 16A 250V 250W NPN (ON Semi)
6 MJ15024G Bipolar Power 16A 250V 250W NPN (ON Semi)
18 Polyester Film Capacitors DME 400V.01 ( BR bypass)
1 35V Bridge Rectifier

I know this is only a start, and doesn't include the stuff I need from Joe.....the PCB, led board, storage caps, RCA inputs......and other stuff I haven't thought of...

P L E A S E help me come up with a more comprehensive list for this restore......I really need help. Chime in and give me your Mouser parts numbers for stuff I'll need....

I may end up with a mess nor an aborted attempt, but I am going to ive this a go. Cotta find the right scope and signal generator....and perhaps other equipment....so please give me your thoughts, or old scopes....

Looks good. Get the silicone based heat sink grease though. It's a whole lot messier ands VERY hard to get off of things, all good qualities where it's used.
No need to match the outputs or drivers, that's what the emitter resistors are for , to force current sharing. There really isn't much else to get. besiders the stuff from Joe. How about the board from Mark?? I thought he did good, even put the 2n3403's on.

OK...thank you Lee for advice on the scope. I am awaiting the arrival of a Hitachi V-212A with probe..

It is here if anyone wants to look at it and suggest any additional accessories I might need.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dl ... OC:US:1123

Now I gotta find a signal generator. Please give me some suggestions.. Like the scope, I don't want to spend a load of money.

I have ordered the led light kit for the 400 from Joe along with a populated board. I am also going to buy one from Mark.

I have the order for Mouser ready to go, having changed the thermal grease to a silicone based one..

Any last minute suggestions for the Mouser order? Direct me to the signal generator that will do what I need for the PLWO conversion, and I think I'll be ready when everything arrives..

Thanks Mark and Lee and everyone who has helped me this far...
