I'm the Red Knight, by grant of the Black
I had just about quit posting on the site after reading that FB turns your likes and comments into metadata. I've been dropping in from time to time to see what friends/relations are up to, but today, I log on and find that they want my blankety-blank phone number. No way in hell!! If I had the IT skills, I'd start up an anti-social media site...

PayPal wanted a scan of my social security card...
NO POSSIBLE WAY would I do that.

Deactivated my account a couple months ago. Tired of seeing what "friends" are having for breakfast.

I use it to catch up on friends but I seldom post anything on my page. I was asked for my phone number but just never entered it. FB pesters me every few months for a phone number but I just ignore it.

Yes FB like any other big web site, Google, ebay, Amazon etc collect meta data for marketing purposes. They even sell the data which is how they survive.

Heck even here at Phoenix we collect meta data.

Facebork is a facepalm.

I stopped getting emails about hot Nigerian princesses and $50 million waiting for me a long time ago.

I'd just send them girls fleeing back home anyway.

Some people would say that is another way to scan the obituaries to see if their friends passed on.

I've never signed up for FB.

There was a line in a recent book I read about FB.
Louisiana Longshot - Jana Deleon
"Facebook had to be the biggest playground for self absorbed assholes that the world had ever seen."

I don't have a Facebook account, but Geri does. I supply her with a lot of pictures I take for her to upload to her page. Forums is where it's at for me.

Nando.

I have a lot of cousins. I use Facebook mainly to check for family news....saves a lot of e-mailing....and duplicate posting of my awesome fishing pics..

I use FB to communicate and keep track of people that I either don't know well enough to call or don't want to call. :toothy5:

Facebook is a tool. What you choose to make of it us entirely up to you. It can be useful for socializing, reconnecting, staying connecting, staying informed, and so on.

It can also be a tool used to turn you INTO a tool. Think the proliferation of "selfies" and "selfie sticks".

As for data harvesting? Yeah I'm sure they do it. But so what? You think they are the only place that does it? Even if you hate the online world, adamantly refuse to get an account, and "stay off the radar as much as possible", you would be aghast to learn how quickly anyone can learn a lot about you.

They key to all this seems to be using a little common sense (I know...a lot of people don't) and understanding that it pays to be picky with what you choose to "like", "share", comment on, and add as a "friend'. I almost always ignore and block game requests, most lowbrow memes, and anything that urges me to 'like' and 'share'. Also by posting multiplicity of interests, including random stuff from left field, it makes it difficult for the data mining algorithms to get an accurate read on you.

And learn how to use your privacy settings.

You are correct Sir. Use if to your advantage if you like but don't give away the farm or post something that may be detrimental to yourself in the future. I myself do a lot more reading then posting or liking.
