I know I'm getting off topic even more but after discovering this site I've started looking at everything Phase Linear. One thing strikes me funny while reading on other Forums, some saying just how terrible the 400 Series 1 was but then a quick check on E-Bay tells me that in general, my almost 50 year old amps cost more now than I paid way back when! Even for one's not functioning!

I know, not a great comparison seeing that any new amp is 4 to 5 times the cost and for sure, the Phase 400 at +/- 400.00 in the very early seventies was still a lot of money in my teens When making 2.50 an hour at the grocery store.

Welcome to the dark side.

The techs, geeks and engineers here will get you sorted. Or drive you insane.
That impells my mind to do a parody of an old song my dad sang years ago:

"Techs, geeks and wild engineers - they'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane."

Some...
Many folks, myself included, think the PL400 sounded better than the original PL700 and PL700B. The fully complementary-wired PL400 and PL700 Series II amplifiers sounded better than their predecessors. And of course, the WOPL-upgraded amplifiers sound the best of all.

Is there a case when a PL400 burned anything? I only know of the PL700 causing fires in speakers.
indirectly, yes. When I worked at the pro sound shop, a Guy brought in a 12 inch woofer for recone. It had jumped the gap, and the amplifier kept trying to get it back in. it eventually caught on fire. The crowd thought it was part of the show when smoke came pouring out of the bass bin. The amp survived.
