Broken beyond repair but highly affable
Our beloved Benton Harbor, MI institution couldn't make it in it's current form and is throwing in the towel:

RIP 1926-2012

Man, my first radio control for model airplanes was a Heathkit 5 channel rig my Dad soldered together for a Christmas present. Loved that thing.

Now that is a first, finally someplace that the current administration was not spending federal dollars on. A real shame because many electronics nuts like us got our start on Heathkits, Knight Kits or Eico kits.

I read the analyst report today that says Rat Shack is not far behind Heath.

Rat Shack stuck their toes in to many streams. They kept throwing money at things that had not made them the company they were.

Yup, agree Larry. The foray into cheap mobile phones cost Rat Shack dearly.

Man.. I remember heathkit computers.. even lil stores in strip malls, if memory (or hallucination) serves me right...

Bummer!

Those were Zenith (Groupe Bull?) computers and a ZX80 was probably a better kit if they made one.

ZX80s were flat out incredible!

Our franchised dealer bit the dust a few months ago. Seems the owner-head of the franchisee is nearing 80 and she needed the building sold.

It was the second location after a fire and the mortgage was a b---- as well. PITY- after 40 plus year and a second store.

PS Cellphones were a b---- for them as well. They are for EVERYBODY.

PPS So was DISH NETWORK.
