Has anyone listened to a pair of these? Ive seen them a few times here and there, but their appearance and slim design always leaves me wondering what they could actually stand up to. Id have to hear them with an 1801 putting the power to them, for long periods of time at high volume... I could make a serious opinion of them then. The add says 800w, if that means each, then possibly 2 1801's, running mono under the same circumstances.

A few months back, I listened to a pair powered by a Pass Labs system at Innovative Audio. They sounded nice. I believe they are a hybrid type of speaker.

Oh Nando, I should have known, If anyone had listened to these it would be you my friend. The amount of gear you have seen and heard, never ceases to amaze me, not mention the pieces you own.

Ive never heard any Pass amps but have been intrigued by them for many years now... Im sure it would be an interesting combination.

Ben: Snagging those Carver Amazing speakers @ $500 would be a very good deal. The Pass Labs system at IA was sold and the asking price was $10K. I do like spending time listening to different systems. The combination of components is more important than throwing a system together with your best stuff. We've discussed that at length in other threads.

THAT'S A 60" RIBBON IN THERE AND IT WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED. I remember when these came to the market. The first set I saw was at Circuit City in Phoenix. They had a pair setup in their listening room hooked up to an Onkyo AV receiver. They tried to market these as home theater speakers. It didn't work very well since these a power hungry speakers. A 50 watt amp just doesn't do them justice. And of course, these can be bi-amped which is the best way to listen to them. I auditioned a set several years ago. I hooked them up to some Behringer amps and ran them through my console. Those four big 12's will produce some thunder.

These are notorious for shutting down solid state amps. Even the Carver Silver 7T could not drive them. Make sure you have 2 ohm stability, or tubes, if you decide to buy them.

Doc, you don't think a Carver TP-2400 would light em up??

I know nothing about that amp. The issue is the treble impedance is about 1 ohm. These are like electrostats without the phase shift between current and voltage, so the amps try really hard to drive them until smoke erupts. If the TP 2400 is a dual rail type amp it probably is not a good match. The Bryston 4 .....you get the idea. Lots of output transistors, big iron, or tubes. Or a McIntosh amp running on the 2 ohm taps.
