Gillette Craigslist---- Cherry La Scala's

OK.......I won the cabinets at the crazy price of 152 dollars for the pair....so I will have to put together a pair of La Scalas now, os if anyone has drivers, horns, crossovers that they would like to unload, I'm your guy.. I don't think I could buy the plywood for this price..and they are here in St. Augustine. Just gotta go pick them up. I really didn't want to win the m after hearing of Skratch and Lee's project, but for this amount of money, they'd make good bachrrom speakers...I don't have a system in the bathroom yet..

Looks like a road trip for Sutton. You are a man of many projects...Where do you find the time?

Man Id love to answer that for Sutton !!!!!! LMAO..... Hey Sutton ole buddy ole pal...... I know a great place to build those La Scalas !!!!! You know you dont have room for that project !!!!

Here are some pics of the LaScala cabinets. Thy are in fair shape. I think a little Bondo and some flat black paint and the cabinets would be ready for some drivers and crossovers. So, what do you guys think? Did I do alright for $151.99?
Can anyone tell the vintage from the serial number? One has a serial number and the other one is kinda weird. I'll post pics of the tags and see if you can figure out what is up with the one enclosure...

Thanks..

I have seen a pair of La Scalas which have been altered to increase the size of the cabinet and add ports at the bottom of the cab. I really do not think I want to change these from the original configuration, but does anyone know how close these are to being the correct volume for gettin the best response from the drivers? Do the Crites have a lower fs? Any suggestions on the rebuilding appreciated...There is no insulation or other acoustic treatment present in these cabinets whatsoever. What do you all suggest? Insulation? Foam? Anyone heard a set of these speakers? What can I expect? I think the published FR for the original speaker is something like 51 hz up to 25,000 hz..but I've not seem a graph, and I'm sure Al has done some work on these babies. I might be better off to purchase them premade from Al...Although I have a lot of crossover parts, I usually end up not having the specific values a design call sor anyway, so I'll get in touch with Al concerning the crossover..and Lee......I never did receive the diagram you were going to email me. My email ...if you could still send it to me.. Thanks a bunch...I looked in the Kornerhorn plans, and there is no crossover design included with the enclosure plans, and using the same drivers thay may be the same design or very close...

Thanks all....

Dropped the ball on that one Sutton, headed your way.

Thanks for the email Lee. I really appreciate it. Al says the only Atlas driver worth using is the one in quotes..."Don't use the Atlas driver unless it clearly say PD5-VH" So, are the ones you have these, or different ones? I know I need Al's crossovers, Bob Crites woofers, and the midrange drivers and horns and the tweeters are still up in the air. He says the mids are the most important with the tweeters being less so, but it also looks like the midrange drivers and horns are where the big money is spent as well. I need to luck into a pair of good mids and horns...for as little cabbage as possible, or maybe start with whatever and try to upgrade at a later date. Also appears that the 40's is about all you can expect from the bottom end with this design..Looks like you have to use a sub..
I can't wait to hear them, but it's still going to be a month or more away as I left them in Florida to be a project to be worked on there..

They are Atlas drivers. Don't know the numbers yet. And yes that's where the money is spent. About 1400 for 2" drivers and wood horns.

From what I can determine, a one inch compression dirver is what is used for the tweeter, and a two inch compression driver for the mids. The one inch driver is the least expensive and is the least worrisome and expensive...I do not know what horn to use though. Also the two inch compression driver sems to be the harder one to find. as well as the horn for it. I am wondering how well some of the common brands of two inch compression driverws would work, like Eminance or Selenium...I have found some that will allow crossover points down in the 500 hz range and will handle lots of power. There are even products made by Pyle for way cheap, but I don't know what they would sound like. I have found some one inch drivers made by JBL which are affordable and are the ones shown on Al's site complete with measurement..I is the2426 compression driver. Looks pretty good on paper...

What two inch compression driver and horn would you experiment with? I can always upgrade later, especially if I don't have a ton of money tied up in the Selenium, Emminance, Pyle or other driver and horns...Give me a suggestion or two...

The original mid drivers and horns I have are 1". The tweets are the EV-35, or T-350's.

You can spend a whole lot of money on the mids, that's what makes or breaks this type of speaker system. To me the 1" mid drivers and horns can be shrill and annoying if you don't have the aototransformer set on the right taps. It takes some experimenting but you can get them to sound good, still not in the same league as the 2" drivers. That being said there is probably an overlap where an excellent 1" driver sounds better than a cheaper 2" driver, but sad to say I haven't experienced enough of either to tell you where that point is.

The B&C DCM-50 2" mid horn drivers are not hard to find, well for less than 770.00 a pair they might be.

I ordered the Universal crossovers from Al yesterday, but he has a 4 week lead time, so that'll give me time to put the other components together. I was going to use the Lambda Acoustics 15" TD-15's but I may have to use the upgraded ones I have with the Apollo upgrade. As I remember, it enables the speaker to extend its response out to 1000 hz or higher. I'm thinking the regular Lambda only goes up to 250 hz or so...I'll probably end up with the Crites woofers, but gotta decide between the cast and stamped frames. I think the cast frames will fit in the older La Scala enclosures without having to cut the baskets, but I'll need to measure when I go to FL the next trip. I was going to try to put them together for a test run, IF the crossovers are ready by then. I ordered it in kit form, which should be no problem. I've built many crossovers before.

Does anyone know if Acoustic Elegance is a viable entity? I think Nick McKenney went to work with them when he sold Lambda Acoustics to them. I've kinda lost track of him and tried to email AE, but get no response. I know they would have the T/S params which would really help me with this build..
