FWIW, I think I would be interested in a build-able core if the price was right. Depending on several factors- completeness, cost of cores, face plates, etc.

I'm on the hook for the seed money. The NET PROCEEDS will be the Phund, for a moment let's call it an Audio Idea Incubator. Most folks who have an idea around here have the resources to bring it to fruition. What if somebody doesn't???? Or there's a hell of a buy on rare one time limited run on something????? There's sooooooooo many places to go with this......

Wow, that's extremely generous of you! I'm guessing there's significant risk here, but if the price is right on the initial buy, it should come back to you.

Still, that's a lot of work to be done, just getting started.

Very cool idea. I'm not even sure what to do with it.

Love what you did there with the title. The "Phoienix Phund". Perfect. Well Phase Linear Phanatic has your back all the way with this one. I have read so many other forum topics as of late. It seems from what I gather; you have mentioned that it is soon possible to be building brand new PL700B's from the ground up. With new everything. This being said; I am wondering whether or not such an endeavor DOES require that of a Phund? To buy such high end parts at reasonable costs, one would have to purchase in bulk and that can be useless unless more than a couple people are only interested in paying for new builds. I mean; who has storage for 36,000 transistors in their basement? Not I? LOL! But even be it for rebuilds, it's still a great idea. It would help drive costs down on the rebuilds. And possibly Joe's boards if we are contributing to the parts buys that help populate the boards? That'd be cool? I think I get where you may be headed with this? MAYBE?...................

It's almost like starting a company and letting the members become stake holders. When we contribute funds to finance the builds, we own stock. :D I wonder if we can get on the DOW? Ticker symbol????.............

Lee, do you have an illness? I have a friend in Texas that had hepatitus that became liver cancer and he finally got his transplant recently.
 
I'm new here but I like this idea. Obviously there will be things that need to be in place. But overall it's a great idea. And with great members this could work pretty good IMO
 
Well...he was in prep when the first one was rejected...about time.

He got in a car accident last week to boot but wasn't hurt...car was totalled, other driver uninsured....been there, had an insurance rider (gone afterward)...funny but the economy didn't suck at THAT time, just an idiot lady with no license either. The officer was not amused...
 
I'm not sure if I have my head completely wrapped around the subject here but allow me to share a thought.

In thinking of group buys, obviously enough have to commit to buy something to get the price down no? Or, if advertising for the site was to occur, then the proceeds from advertisement dollars could go towards the collective to drive prices down for its members?

Also, take into concideration, an amplifier as a key focus product for members. Even still, something like ground-up 700B-WO, completely new, would still be an expensive purchase yes? For me I would have a bit of a time, at this very moment, to plunk down much cash even on a good offer right now. But... That does lead me to another thought.

How about breaking group buys into parts? For example, I'm guessing that a power transformer, as a part, is the most expensive in an amplifier. Next is chassis, which could greatly vary, depending on how sublime it needs to be or not. Then heat sinks. Then boards, caps transistors etc, etc.

So basically, if enough are interested, you could create a complete schedule on a spreadsheet for interested members, with all of the parts on the list, and attempt group buys, let's say monthly. Then maybe tranformers would be a good place to start. Buying those would be a good commitment sign.

Tied into that, sensible commitment/partnership from key suppliers on such an endeavor might not be a bad idea. Advertising links for them & good PR toward a community of enthusiasts. What I see of this industry is becoming a long goodbye. Maybe I'm wrong, but the electronics industry has been receding in the mid-fi catagory for some time, and anyone connected to it, from parts to the sales floors has been affected. There has to be someone interested.

Well, anyway, just thinking.
