The serial number on the 700II amp is 7A12306. That should make it a late production full comp amp.
The rest of the gear was purchased at the same time so its all late production gear.
Not a bad price if your close to avoid shipping. The amp is worth the asking price IMP.

I think he is talking about the preamp. Some people stay away from that model.

THey are fixable. I fixed one, though it was not a Series II. it worked fine, but other than looking cool with all the switches and knobs it wasn't that amazingly good or bad. I wouldn't pay much for one at any rate.

The biggest failing of that preamp is that it all runs on one single voltage supply. That one supply is very poorly regulated. Each of the class A gain stages that runs off that single supply has poor PSRR. Other than that Mrs. Lincoln...

I may contact the seller in Portland. I have been told to stay away from the PL 700 Series one, but I can't remember why. Does anyone know if the Series two is an improvement over series one? And, can it be WOPLed?

Series 1 700B is a very nice amp and can be fully converted. The original, very early PL700 (no B) have unique mechanical design and do not lend themselves to easy conversion.

The Series 2 are essentially the same as the 700B with the exception of cosmetic changes. Either the 700B or the Series 2 are straightforward conversions. The Series 2 chassis had some height variability in them so the backplane kits do not always fit properly requiring the swap out for the White Oak Audio chassis.

The original 700 can be converted to a WO'd fully comp with a chadsis, heatsinks....

This looks like a fully comp amp. It is rough looking. Buy the lot and sell what you don't want on eBay and get the amp for free.
why am I not buying it? Well I just sent all my money to Joe for a chassis , revE control board and revB backplates

So now I learn this after buying a 4000... Desperate to get rid of the Marantz with it's muddy phono stage, and having a non-functional 3000, the 4000 was from the second owner and looked beautiful. To quote Homer Simpson: "OOH! Shiny!!" It even came in the original box with the user manual.

Actually, I'm not displeased with the 4000 at all, the Auto-Correlator and Peak Unlimiter actually does a little something for the sound that I like, adjustable turnover for the tone controls are a minor plus. I actually was looking at a Carver 4000 with Sonic Holography, but it was more of a curiosity than a necessity. I've also heard that a design flaw was the whole daughtercard-on-backplane construction that led to dubious solder joints.

ASSUMPTION: PSSR = Power Supply Rejection Ratio?

SO: Any upgrades / modifications available? I still have to contact Don (Watts Abundant) who said he'd have a look at it. I have a video-in-progress about what it isn't doing.

In short, I needed something, this one looked good, I bought it!

Yes Mark, PSRR is what you wrote...

Nothing wrong with the 4000 but it will never be the pinnacle of audio performance because of these design limitations.

PS: Mark I have one of those shiny objects too It looks very cool but I have never found its performance to live up to its cool looks.
