Heathkits were hand built by their buyers, no? If your friend has it aren't they interested in buying it? I would figure that something built at home 30-40 years ago that still rocks like that should be good.

Most working Heath gear that old probably was built very well by the hobbyist that built the kit. I especially marveled at their television set kits, they looked like nice sets for the time.

I worked on one of the AA1640's a number of years ago.

If my memory serves me correct.... it used RCA1B05 output transistors. Phase Linear used these same transistors for a very short period of time and found that they did not current share very well and stopped using them. RCA1B05's were also used by Peavey, Spectro Acoustics, etc. The drivers were TO-66's type and are becoming very hard to find these days. There is no bias trimpot. There are (2) or (3) diodes in the bias circuit and were not your typical 1N4XXX series (or P strap transistors). Somebody had replaced one of the diodes with a 1N4004 thinking well any diode will do. Wrong! One of the mica insulators was also punctured.

The fellow who owned the amp also purchased (3) Phase Linear amps from me and shortly thereafter passed away. After his death I found out he knew he was dying and it was his lifelong wish to own these amplifiers and listen to his ideal stereo system before he died. There is also an interesting side story about this fellow and several trips from Oregon to my house. Perhaps I will go into it when more time permits.

yes you are right built by the buyer my friend dose not want it because it is too big and he dose not need that much power I got it because I thought it was high power high current but it dose not have what I am looking it cant push my diy/moded speakers that have dvc 12s in them they they just use too much power I started to some work to it to make it better but it did not respond well so it is not right for me so I hope some will buy it so I can start puting back for a 500wpc wopl I am know one of them will have all the grunt I need plus how can you go wrong with super low thd nosefloor and and what I imagine is a 4 digit dampingfactor

And what IS the rated output for an AA 1640? Hey, found it on hifiengine...

Power output: 200 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo), 800W into 8Ω (mono)
Frequency response: 20Hz to 20kHz
Total harmonic distortion: 0.05%
Input sensitivity: 1.25V
Signal to noise ratio: 100dB

Can you really bridge it to mono and get 800 watts? MERCY. 200/stereo is enough to get kicked out of town here, unless you DJ college dances.

I do not know if you can really bridge it to mono for 800 watts some thing say so I do not know if it is in the paper work or not I read on a site that a stock on benched 265wpc and and if you stiffen up the ps and some other things you can get around 300wpc at 8 ohms mine did not take well to the stiffening of the ps so I put it back to stock and passing it a long for some one different if you are interested in it I will see if I can get my friend to ship it

At least the Heathkit has a decent amount of heat sink. That's important in bridging to dissipate heat. Sort of reminds me of the Dynaco 400M I had which was a decent amp but did not hold a candle to a PL400 in SQ. I have not heard a Heathkit in at least 30 years

Everyone here knows I live on barely $200 a month more than that, the real aim here is to find a way to get your sale to a wider potential audience to sell it. If that means helping you figure out how to pack a heavy amp well and get it there A-OK, that is why we are here.

I hope you find someone to buy that beast, it's a piece of audio history, very nice! You might want to CL in Phoenix area, much bigger market of buyers with $$'s and not too far for them to pick it up. Keep that CL ad up, I've mentioned it to some locals in Tucson for ya!
