I have finally started building myself a subwoofer. It's been on the list for 10 years, and I have built subs for lots of other people in the meantime, but just never built myself one. That has changed, and I'm probably about half way there. I have cut most of the MDF and plywood. I have the inner box built pretty much.....still have to add the 2" X 4" bracing for the inside, and have the wood cut for the outside box...except I have to go buy another sheet. Making the inside box 24" by 24" means the outside box has to be 25 12" X 25 1/2" ( actually a fraz over that to allow for the polyurethane glue to do its' thing.. and the veneered ply comes in 48" X 96" sheets....EXACTLY....so it's going to take two sheets of it. I probably should have just doubled up on the 3/4" MDF and veneered the whole thing, but...I thought I'd do it the "easier" way... Yeah, right...

I've attached some pictures to give yu guys an idea of the project..but I'm the world's worst at taking pictures while the is action going on. I always forget until I'm done.. but you will get t idea. I' using a Lambda Acoustics 15" driver, which has an fs of around 24 hz, ad I'm tuning the box to about 27 hz, give or take a hz or two.using two 4"ports flared at both ends, ad each being 17" in length...(on program says I am tuning the box to 17hz, so go figure...maybe someone who knows can tell me...I can't remember how you calculate the port length when using double flares..

Anyway, this is basically the same ub that evin and I built for him, except I think my box is a little larger (deeper) an the driver may be a different model, I'm not positive.. I remember we built hi enclosure a little larger, and it wasn't producing enough thunder, so he cut the box down to a depth to about 22" deep, I think..

Anyway, here are a few pictures., What do you all think?

Nice work Sutton. Looks like a great subwoofer driver you are using.

That looks awesome Sutton - keep the photos coming. What do you plan on driving this with? You'll need to keep us posted on your progress.

I noticed you aged between the first and second photos. :laughing9:

Yes, quite the time lapse photography! Very nice looking project and driver there. Will be interested on how you integrate it into your system and the audio results.

Yeah, I did age a bit between the two. The first picture is the famous Kevin Sturgill...and the other pic is me at the table saw, looking like I'm about to crap my pants...and I was....trying to cut all the MDF after not building a speaker in 6 or 7 years...it was tough to figure it out. We finally got it and didn't waste any MDF or ply, so that was good. I probably am going to run the sub with 1000 watt plate amp in he beginning. I have a Parts Express one new in the box that I need to use. I really don't know how important fidelity is in a subwoofer.. I may be wrong, and maybe I should use one channel of a Phase Linear. It would have to be a 700b though, so you'd have some control over the relative volume of the sub. Has anyone compared the use of a plate amp and a really good amp driving a subwoofer?

What is sound quality to a sub????? My god man, check freq response of the amp. Guarantee you it will not be flat to 10hz....

Sutton, Kevin has a sub he'll have for sale in a couple months....

What happened to thre Kevin pic?? Do I have to add my own???

How about a bridged 700B????
