First off, here’s some history. I’ll try to keep this short but, it’s a long history.

I first built a Dyna-Kit PAS-3X pre-amp in 1967, then a Dyna-Kit ST-120 amp in 1972. I was 17 and 22 years old respectively and not afraid to take chances. However my AR-3a’s deserved much more wattage than the Dynaco was able to give and the new Phase Linears had just started selling so, I was really tempted to move on and have such unheard of power.
Borrowing $360., I bought a new PL-400 in 1974, the following year a PL-4000 for another $380. I had to save for months and months to get those sums.

The amp was the greatest but by 1979 blew and was repaired by ‘Analogique’ in NYC. It blew again in1990 and so I bought a used B&K ST-202 as a temporary amp which sounded awful and lacking compared to the sound of the PL-400. So, I sent the PL-400 to Phase Linear for repair in 1991. It was lost in transit and after two months it was later found damaged sitting at a depot of the shipper. Phase Linear sued the shipper for damages and didn’t charge me for the repair. Phase Linear claimed they no longer had meter face plates and commissioned an outside supplier to custom make them. The only difference was the face plate’s color was now white in color and not the original silver color.

By late 1991 the PL-400 blew out again, so I sadly continued with the dull sounding B&K amp.
Until 2005, at which point I started buying/hoarding numerous PL-400s on the auction site because I thought they’d be unobtainable in the future, and I couldn’t afford the pricier PL-700 model.
By 2009 I felt my stacked AR-LST speakers actually needed more power than double PL-400s.
So, I purchased two PL-700 Series 2 from Ed Blackwood and have been happy ever since. They’re excellent sounding however lack “watts abundant’s” relays which I’d like to have installed as I still live in fear of a blow-out.

Now, I want to rebuild my six PL-400s and use them in other smaller systems. However my fear of rebuilding them myself is keeping me down.
I also find the sound quality on the PL-400s to be a bit ‘sweeter’ sounding than the PL-700s.
So, another fear is the ‘WOPL’ version might sound different from PL’s original sound quality which I completely enjoy, especially with AR speakers.

So, because I’m obviously hesitant to begin rebuilding the six PL-400s, I’d actually prefer to buy two re-built PL-700s Series Two from someone providing the price was fair.

My possible options:
1.) Find the balls I once had when I was younger and attempt rebuilding the six PL-400s one at a time.
2.) Hoping someone would give me great price on two PL-700s that he has completely rebuilt.
3.) Or, finding someone who can rebuild my six PL-400s at a fair price.
4.) Clearing my mind, forgetting my silly fears, getting off my ass, biting the bullet and get moving.
5.) Selling all of the PL-400s and only having rebuilt PL-700s.

My fears:
1.) I’m too hesitant to attempt rebuilding the six amps myself because my level of patience and concentration has decreased with age and I may screw it all up and blow myself up.
2.) The cost of shipping the six amps even if shipped one at a time will add up to much money compounded by the fear of shipping damage. This is depending on if I could actually find someone here who would rebuild all six amps at a fair price.
3.) I’ve forgotten even the most basic knowledge of electricity that was learned many years ago in the USN.
4.) Continuing using my PL-700s without “watts abundant’s” relay is keeping me on edge each time I listen to my system playing loud, which is usually the case.

Go for it rebuild your 400's yourself and worry about all the bs later after you sit back and enjoy your new/old 400's

Thanks for responding gentlemen.

In response to “laatschâ€; honestly, I haven’t a clue regarding prices but, would sure like to know.
I really can’t accurately state nor do I want to insult anyone because of my ignorance of such matters. I’m open to all suggestions.

I will say that I am anxious and excited about having my amps rebuilt properly as I see the “White-Oak†boards and circuit design are the best thing that ever happened to Phase Linear!
I would really benefit with much more information regarding all aspects of the price of components, construction, if there’s an increase of power and most all the sound quality.

Finding this site has for me been a revelation and has brought me much relief and happiness and I’ve become very hopeful.
I can’t begin to tell everyone here how dreadful it’s been all these years since the late seventies being turned down by so many repair people who stated they “wouldn’t even approach a Phase Linear amplifierâ€.

So, I’m weighing all options and hoping for some good advice from members of this site.
Many thanks to every one.
FM
P.S. To answer “billboardâ€, I’m located in New Jersey. Out of six PL-400s. two are dead and the other four are making slight weird noises but operated the last time I tried them two years ago.

Just to put a bit of reality into your mix check out what a 500w/channel amp new goes for now. I doubt you can find one anywhere for <$4000. A WOPL 700, which is basically a handmade new amp, should run you $2000 or less...depending.

These beasts will compare to anything 2-3 times the price. It's a no brainer. The only question should be CAN YOU HANDLE A WOPL!!?

By the way...Welcome. This place is great, stick around.

If you have been lurking for awhile, then you've read some of the build threads. If you havent then you should. Sound quality is above and beyond what you've heard with a stock PL. Power is slightly more. Reliability is now something PL could only have dreamt about.

Member Wopl sniffer has 4 or 5 Clair Brothers White Oaked Series II 700's for sale. I think his last price is 1800.00 Very nice amps. Perry is his name and he does excellent work.

I would suggest you do a little reading to acquaint yourself with the WOPL and what it can do.....

WHAT?!?!

I still haven't gotten past the statement that you want to "rebuild your six (6!) PL 400s for a SMALLER system"!!! :) Go for it man, you won't regret it, I can attest to that. You could save yourself some money and just have two of your six PL 400 amps rebuilt to start with, since you're planning to use them in a smaller system than the one the 700s are driving. Then you could get two more done later. After that, you will want to rebuild the last two yourself, I predict!
Welcome and wishing you all the best as you move forward.

Welcome aboard, If you are looking for a "New" WOPL, I can help you out. I got a couple left (just sold another this morning).

This place is the best for all thing Phase Linear (and a lot of other things NON Phase Linear). I recognize your name, we have spoken a couple times on the Bay Bonzoro999

I have a pair of consecutive serial numbers Clair PL 700 Series II's freshly WOPL'd I'd make you a great deal on.

Remember when shopping for "Rebuilt" 700's that it usually takes about 80 hours in labor alone (for a WOPL). A bench tech can command up to $30-$50 per hour, add $600 or more in parts/wire/DC Protection board/new faceplate etc... (can be more), and a couple grand for a WOPL is a friggin bargain.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.
I would like to apologize for seeming so ambivalent but, being a lover/owner of PL amps for most of my life has allowed me to become somewhat of an inquisitive type to all of this information.
As an owner/listener of PL equipment for the past 42 years all of this information is somewhat overwhelming but, it’s sinking in little by little. Please pardon my projected air of apprehension.

As suggested by “laatsch55†I have been scouring this vast site. In doing so I’ve become a bit more enlightened but just as inquisitive.

Nonetheless, if I may appeal too “Perry†(WOPL Sniffer)†to please elaborate.
To your point, yes we were in contact briefly a couple of weeks ago.
As I’m still on the fence in terms of which way I shall wander, I wonder if it’s possible for you to list the full breakdown of work you have performed on your offerings?
If it’s easier, perhaps you can email with such information along with your prices?

I must admit that being an owner and listener of Phase Linear components all of these years does not qualify me as one who actually understands the full workings and directions to take at this point in my appreciation of these wonderful components.

Basically, everything is gutted and tossed in the can. It's a completely brand new amp just using the shell and tranny of a PL amp. All the boards, TO3 shit and whatever is recycle bin fodder. $600ish in parts and 80hrs labor + a donor chassis/tranny/faceplate/meters

Let your hair down and enjoy the ride!

To make a long story short, the only thing left original is the transformer and heatsinks/chassis/meters. Everything is new.

Oh yeah, forgot the purchase of an amp to start with $300-$1000 depending on how lucky you get

Would love to see a photo of the white faceplate PL400. That is truly rare. Perhaps one of a kind.

Gees, I guest Perry and “Northwinds†have made it clear to me what goes into a ‘rebuild’.
My questions have been answered.

‘Decision-Mode’ may have to be put into affect right now?

To “FredR’s†reply; I caught that amp in my travels also. The curious thing the seller had noted was that it had a PL700B transformer. His rational being PL must’ve had some extra parts left over from the 700B days of production. My thinking was all it meant for PL was to add a new sticker on the transformer as I believe the transformers are the same in Series1 and Series 2, so the seller’s remarks were uncertain.
For some reason I sort of knew that because of the good looking condition, especially the face plate’s condition meant it would go for more than I was willing to shell out.

Regarding the white face-plate, it’s the meter face-plates that are white, which I almost like better as they remind me of the old Crown RR tape machines from the late ‘60s, early ‘70s.
As I recall back then most meter faces for just about any device were white. PL started the silver face? Marantz and Mac with their blue faces, SAE with their yellowish ones.
If PL went through the trouble of replacing mine, I feel they must’ve ordered a larger run, therefore, there must be others lurking around somewhere.
I’ll try and post a foto as soon as I dig it out, it’s very attractive in white, more ‘pro’ looking.

“WOPL Snifferâ€, you had made the point to me in one of our earlier contacts that it is better to put the money into a PL-700 as compared to a PL-400.
I tend to agree with you about that however, I have this collection of 6 PL-400s (all cosmetically in good shape) but, I feel they might be hard to sell because 3 or 4 of them are not healthy. So, I’m sort of got myself in a corner.
Taking the PL-700 route as you suggested is the best way to go in all respects.

I just wish someone or something would just push me off of the fence.
It seems everyone here is a fervent believer and the driving force to go “WOPL†is a strong one.

It’s like I’ve said, after being a PL fan being left to decay in the ‘Hi-Fi’ scrape-yard for so many years because one had to search long and very hard to find anyone to even consider repairs as most wouldn’t, much less improvements, this site and its strong-advocate membership is quite a surprising issue for me!
Not to mention, unexpected and definitely very exciting.

Well, my point was the parts were about the same cost wise so going to the 700 wopl is more bang for the buck. But, you also have a big collection of 400's which cuts your initial cost down since you have a place to start. I don't knock the 400's, they are great amps WOPL'd or not, but I want the POWER BABY...... Once you put a 700 WOPL in your system, all else pales..... I'm just saying.....

If my arms were longer, I'd push you off the fence.

Who wouldn't want a set of consecutive serial numbered Limited production Clair Bro's Phase Linear 700 Series II????? You would be joining a VERY SMALL CLUB. Only a couple of us have them and the number available to the general population is ZERO.

Either way you go, Have some fun brother.... PL RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
