hi my friends,
if i may try and use the knowledge from the Phoenix group.

i still need a preamp, the chiro, i really didnt like that...
so adcom has sorta got my attention, for no other reason but, i just keep seeing the name almost everywhere
so i am looking at the gxx's. group, i have not noticed any other models as of yet. does anyone have an opinion that they can share?(if you can not share it in public i think there is a cave, something, something around here)

oh, suggestions are welcomed too, and very much
i'm just looking for a little input,
thanks much

Adcom makes good preamps and amps...not a bad choice.

Hey there

I have a GTP-500 or 600 to lend ya, and if you like it we can talk... LMK.

Very decent noise floor and overall sound, but I like more db's available for the bass and treble controls.

I used a gtp-450 for several years and it performed quite well. I actually liked the subtlety of the bass and treble controls, but that just depends on personal taste I suppose. I only got rid of it for something with another tape loop and went with an integrated so I could use my standalone amp for a passive sub I had going otherwise unused. But especially for the low prices you can pick up Adcom stuff for used, seems like really nice gear for the money to me.

You have preamps Jer?

As for the low response bass and treble controls, it's just a good way to justify why you need a cool eq, subharmonic synthesizer and dbx expander or BBE Sonic Maximizer

I have a 585 power amp reworked by Echowars, wonderful amp. I run it with the Hafler, one for highs the other for lows into the Legacy's.

I have been through several preamps and have stayed with my Thoebe.

Adcom's preamps were always among their best stuff. I listened to them a lot while trying to decide how to upgrade from a B&K preamp/Hafler amp combo but never much cared for their look. When I managed to snag a new Counterpoint 5000 preamp and NPS 400 amp for roughly 20 cents on the dollar right after they went bankrupt, I kinda couldn't pass it up.

It really is good sounding stuff for that price point at that time. Depending on the rest of your system, one of them could be a very good match.

i've heard many good things said about their products for a long time now...
all the same, their cosmetic design ethos is simply far too pedestrian/minimalist for my personal tastes.

that said, the last remaining privately run pet shop in my general area, -and my favorite-
now has a fairly serious looking Hi-Fi, (for a pet shop) -set up out in front of god and everybody, no less-
built around a serious looking ADCOM power amp and a pair of KLIPSCH CHORUS or FORTE's (not sure, both models seem to look identical with grilles in place)
with a KENWOOD receiver serving as PREAMP/TUNER i presume. i have yet to be in there when the thing is in actual use,
but i'd wager that "AQUA TROPICS" becomes One Seriously Rockin' Pet Shop whenever that sucker actually does see some exercise...

"OK"
at one time i could even put batteries in a flashlight...
some of them...
but have you looked at flashlights lately, saw one the other day(in walmarK) that was better than $350.00.
i was scared to touch it, so scared that i only used one eye to look
i have two, but could not afford to use both
yes, he(pass) smart guy, and i meant no disrespect to him at all, but you knew that..
have a good day

On a AR speaker forum I visit the Adcom GFA 555 is always seen as a desirable piece to acquire.
Very capable of driving difficult speaker loads.
Been looking for one myself.
They seem to have been seen as overbuilt and thats a good thing.
Their preamps I believe would be as good as anything on the market.
If I remember right they were comparable to SAE .

If you own Adcom, the 555 is the one to own IIRC, the early ones are more desirable as they value engineered the later ones.

I have heard only pretty much good things about adcom gear. I would probably have owned some if they would have made them look a lil sexier with some big ass meters. :rabbit:

I think Adcom and NAD were the first "real world priced" amplifiers that demonstrated the advantages of high current capacity and as such became the "go-to" budget amps for driving difficult speaker loads. They both brought a lot of value to their offerings.
