Derek's Speaker Series/Parallell/Impedance Quandry

"Derek", something like this....
The 2x 15" JBL 2225's alone are worth the asking price.
These sort of things come up often, so there will always be a pair around when you need them.
It's not audiophile, but it sure as hell is rock'n'roll.

You know I like window shopping :) Thanks george, keep 'em coming, will be drooling before long. Had ringing ears last night after that 30 minute burst of loudness, just had to play those explosions again.

Hey Derek - there's a surgical procedure to fix your drooling problem. I understand there are some facial exercises that can help if you want to avoid surgery. :laughing5:

Ringing ears - turn the ringer off as that might help.

I am not a fan of the series speaker arrangement to keep your impedance within an amp's operating safe limits. Out of phase speakers do not present a good compromise.

Nando.

I have a bib so all is good :laughing9:

Well I reached the limit of those Pioneer amps at 11 o'clock on the dial during certain passages in the music, it wasn't overly bad but it is clear to me that I need a real amp (WOPL) and speakers. Am working hard towards it, George is being so kind to guide me through this process as he is in australia too and knows what to look for.

I am learning here Nando thanks to the support of the forum. Its not something I plan to do (series/parallel) with my current selection of speakers and have decided to run the 12 inch drivers very carefully off the WOPL until I get some decent speakers. The towers and 8 inch technics will remain on the VSX-9500s which will also act as the pre-amp for the WOPL. Its a start.

I thought George was in the land of Oz living with the Wicked Witch.

My Pioneer HPM-150 speakers are rated for Nominal Impedance of 6.3 ohms. Doug's WOPL 1000 (which I have been borrowing) loves these speakers. Tried 11 o'clock on the Pioneer Preamp with some new Black Sabbath playing and Geri and I couldn't hear the phone ringing laying on the bed beside us.

Those are some nice speakers Nando and of course excellent photos as always. Thanks for sharing.

My dad got out of the hospital this past Thursday, and he is home, so I am heading over there right now. Will chat, later. Thanks for your comments, Derek.

Thanks Dennis.

Lee: At least he is home. He had an infection in his bladder which caused him to go septic. Besides having COPD, it will take a bit of time for him to recover from this latest bout. He needs an aortic valve replacement. I am taking him to the heart specialist on Monday to see if it will be possible. He has a tumour in his bladder which needs to be removed, too. That's what caused the bladder blockage in the first place.

re: series/parallel, i'm afraid some of you are making some un-necceassary assumptions.
I posted that pic to 'Derek' to explain a point i was making during a phone conversation.
I was NOT praising or denying it's virtues. It was simply part of an explanation.
Whether it works or not is entirely irrelevant.

;)

And we were likewise commenting on it's merits, no reflection on you for it's absurdness BD, I think we know you well enough you were not suggesting that as a viable option.....

So question then... if it's so taboo to be driving speakers in series (which when you get down to it and think about it, yep.. I wouldn't either...), then why do we see soooooo many lofi and midfi receivers and integrated amps out there that do it when you select more than one pair? Even my M80 - it has connections for three pairs in the back. If you do A+B, A+C, or B+C, it'll drive in parallel... BUT.. if you decide to do A+B+C, then A drives in parallel with B/C in series (figure THAT one out... ).

I guess the answer is you might have a pair in the living room, another one deckside outdoors, etc... but nobody ever mentions that when you have two pairs stacked on each other, that you should consider how the amp is wired up to handle multiple pairs.
