Obscure 90s vinyl: 01/10

I have made no secret of my preference for listening to compact discs. It is perhaps worth stressing that I do like vinyl too, despite not owning a turntable these days. In fact, it was something that I invested in heavily during the 1990s when I bought records on a regular basis.

The CD was dominant in this decade, but there were still plenty of labels putting out interesting stuff on vinyl. I always enjoyed picking up (mostly) 7†singles that were released in limited numbers and featured tracks that were often unavailable elsewhere.

Over the next few weeks I’ll showcase ten (relatively) obscure records that made this format so intriguing for me during this period.

I had a blast collecting some of these records at the time. Heading into London and hitting stores like Rough Trade & Sister Ray was not just fun, but also a great opportunity to discover new music.

It wasn't always a success. I did buy a few dogs and made a terrible mistake by shelling out a load of cash for a copy of Nirvana's Hormoaning, only to find later that it was a fake. It was a schoolboy error, but a valuable lesson at the time.

Equally, I was also able to pick up other nice things like the 12" below - often getting my hands on more than one copy.

I am unfamiliar with the 12" you posted. I do like the choice of cassette though. I have yet to try an XLI or and XLI-S.

I take it you still have a stash of vinyl?

I can't recall ever using an XLI (I'm sure I must have done), but the XLI-S is the real deal.

If you can find one for a decent price, they are definitely recommended.

Only a few pieces left. 95% of it was sold or freecycled quite a while back. I'm currently thinking of selling the remainder.

I could have kept the lot, but it made more sense to free up the space - plus I didn't ever see myself getting another turntable.

I have experienced these effects very strongly, especially shivers down the spine and all over, along with goose bumps / goose pimples and a cold feeling.

I've noticed these effects mainly with well mastered recordings of my favorite music turned up loud.

"A Dream Of Blue" immediately has my attention because of its rarity with only 1000 copies produced and hand-painted sleeve. Space Rock? Yup, I would enjoy that!

I can't say that I really have anything as rare and as obscure as you have chronicled so far. I am intrigued of what will round up the remaining records.

You know what?

I still get a kick out of listening to low bit rate streams from Spotify etc. The emotion of the music should still shine through even if the sound quality is less than satisfactory.

(Don't tell Miles I said that! That guy knows a thing or two about a well mastered recording...)

The definition of "rare" varies from one person to the next. I wouldn't say I had anything that was really hard to find (far from it). I have nonetheless, had a number of collectible records pass through my hands over the years.

My record buying days were based purely on what I enjoyed listening to at that time - which just happened to be music made by acts outside of the mainstream.

That Stereolab/Nurse with Wound record is a tough one to find without spending an arm and a leg. I'm happy enough with a digital copy to not splash the cash myself, but it is a really good listen.

Never heard that ISAN single, but their Lucky Cat and Plans Drawn in Pencil albums are a couple I really like and come back to listen to quite a lot over time.
