D-500

I cant say I`ve ever heard of one but after seeing this ad, it seems like it`s the holy grail of amplifiers! Are these amps that sought after?
Asking price of $4300, $2000 spent in parts alone, I think not. What parts could possibly cost that much?

MAYBE, $2000 Canadian but there isn't $2000 in parts, in one. Unless he had to buy a transformer from somebody, or got screwed badly with marked up prices, he's full of shit.

About all he did was upgrade the power caps. Stock everything else. It does take more material than a 700 to upgrade a d-500 so budget about $1000 in materials to do a full comp with new control board. Then a bunch of hours labour

And hopefully with lots of posts after his unpaid sabbatical.
Hi all
I have retired and I am busy putting my fabrication shop together at home so I can build things again. Is getting to cold so time to head back to the Phase linear projects. I will be building a d500 that can drive those low 2 or less ohm Kappa’s some here own. It’s going to have 40 output drivers. Three cooling fans on the back and a dual mono WO board. I have no need for one but I can so I will build it.

Nice! I am looking to do similar, use WO board and build chassis and my own PL style amp with 40 outputs. MJ21196 /195s. I will be driving it with +/- 127 volt rails (2 of them at 10 amps a piece, also I will be using the 220v windings on the primaries of the toroids). This project is after I repair a slew of 400s and 700s, both Series Is and IIs. I have a pile of them from my brother and his son. I traded my rebuilt and upgraded 400 Series II for a 700 Series II (I already have a working one that needs upgraded), a 400 Series II and 400 Series I. Regarding his son, for restoring a 400 Series I and upgrading his 700 Series II, I get a 400 Series I and a 400 Series II.

Anyways, a quick question. I have a "Dual" 500 (Must be an older one, because I know they are D500s. That being said, off the top of you head, do you know the physical size of those 13000 MFD / 125v power supply caps? I have the service manual and it only gives a PL part number, no physical size. I am looking to replace with maybe 15,000 @ 160v. I do have 4 Hitachachi but they may be too physically large.

Thanks!
Jerry

Nice! So for my Dual 500, I would need just 2. How much do you want for 2 if I ay ask? The PL clone I will be making in the future has higher voltage.
