Saw a nakamichi CR1A at a thrift store today, in decent shape for $10. Brought it home, cleaned it up.

I know this is a cheaper model, but this works and sounds great so far! I tried testing with a Maxell XLII 90, recording Leo Kottke's "Peculiaroso". WOW , what a difference in recording quality compared to my old pioneer.

Full deep/impactful bass, natural mid, great high frequency detail, lower noise. Way beyond my expectation and nearly as good as the test tape Larry sent.

Looks like half the deck my KX-1020 is, which is pushing my interest into (fixing) seeing what that'll do.

Congratulations on the pick, Joe. That's an amazing minimal cost for a working cassette deck, regardless of make. I do have a Nakamichi RX-505, and once bitten by the Nak bug you might be dissuaded to think of anything else in its place.

Nice. I remember seeing that at an early tweeter etc. store. Or one like it anyway. We got my dad a BX100. I personally never owned a Nak deck. When I got into buying any gear it was the mid 90's and CD's were my focus.

I honestly cannot readily pinpoint what losses there are in the sound on this deck. If anything, the high frequencies might be a tad warmer. Image and soundstage appears intact.

I'm guessing that better decks have lower hiss?
