Starting this thread on an idea that came to me ... in a dream. :albino:

This is the 'Command Performance' thread.
People can post up in here, asking a "what should I listen to?" request - responded with a play this shout out from fellow brethren.
Obviously you'll need to own the group, genre or specific material called out.

So I'll go first,

What should I listen to ?

Give a genre! If I tell you to play a hip-hop record, you're likely to throw a brick through my window!

(Not to worry- I'd never recommend a hip-hop record...)

Sorry, don't own that.

What you should listen to is the "Sound of the Rain". Play this:

Pick me a genre and I'll tell you what I play. If you pick a specific artist, you might strike gold.
Chances are if you pick a specific album that I don't have, I'll say - try again !

I'll bite.

(Assuming that it is available on Spotify), what "interesting" album should I play over the weekend?

And why?

Daren,

Check out Al Di Meola -

Heart of the Immigrants

Al_Di_Meola_Heart_of_the_Immigrants.jpg

It's a complete album. Listen to it that way.
Al is best known for his 70's/80's, frantic - Chick Corea + Jean-Luc Ponty fusion type days.

This is the new & improved Di Meola.
And the album I always recommend to people unfamiliar with Al and/or unfamiliar with his more mature direction.

Thanks guys.

I'll have a listen to these over the next few hours and report back. I can't find the Al Di Meola album on Spotify, so I'll cobble together some tracks via YouTube.

A few thoughts.

I kicked off with Chris Isaak/Heart Shaped World. I know this artist through Wicked Game – which is on this very album. The rockabilly sound comes through really well and despite streaming via Spotify, this seems to be a well produced recording.

I mentioned that Al Di Meola/Heart of the Immigrants was not available, so I resorted to YouTube to get a brief taster. This was something genuinely new to me. From the few tracks I heard, this appears to be the kind of music that requires your full attention. To be honest, I found this stuff quite relaxing.

I finished off with Ravel’s Bolero as conducted by Sir Georg Solti. I am reasonably familiar with this stirring piece and it seemed appropriate to end the session this way (it is playing as I type).

Spending a couple of hours listening to stuff that is not normally on my menu has been a worthwhile exercise. It gives me a tiny indication of what some of you other gentlemen enjoy spinning.

I’ll put out another shout in the near future. :)

Chris Isaak is a rockabilly/crooner god!! Love love that guy, he was a boxer in Japan for many years and found music and aren't we all blessed that he did!!

I'd like to suggest this:
Lyle Lovett : Joshua Judges Ruth CD (2009) in the same genre, his backup singer, Francine Reed was great friends with my ex-lover and we partied hard up in Phoenix, powerful vocalist, check out her solo recordings too :hello1:

JJR is one of the best recordings I own, it was crafted with much care and has been getting heavy rotation playing with the set up of the Martin Logans
There is so much detail that gives you the 'bumps' and the music has you tappin', if you don't have this recording, you must get it! It's a music lover and audiophile's delight!! Trust Me!!

So, the stu has the day off, suggest me something electronica, from Europe, maybe 1980's Eastern Bloc stuff, any artist, thanks :happy2:

Stuwee,

Wake yourself up with Tomita - Snowflakes are Dancing.

Well done synth. Super clear highs that will send chills up the back of your neck. Will probably shine on the Logan's.

Klaus Schulze: Body Love.

Klaus is the "Adam" of electronica. Lots of looping and sequencing. On the downside, he does get a little "ambience" and "conceptually" oriented on some tracks that sometimes gets a bit monotonous. Body Love is a good selection of rhythmic tracks, is very musical, and he doesn't drift into monotony.

A counterpart to Tomita: Kitaro! The Silk Road recordings are great. Slightly different flavor from Tomita, a bit more adventurous in tonalities and sounds. Asian electronica isn't as rigidly structured in form as the Europeans, more lyrical and melodic as a result.
