Larry,
I know you like Morel. I do too - of what I have heard. I have a pair of MDT33 floating around and some 6".

The MDT30s also looks like a real nice tweeter. This is an easy drop-in on these old Snells. The Seas 8" woofers are the closest match to the Snells
(prestige paper cone CA22RNX and CA22RNY) they also make the snell and audio note drivers. Same cone, but new rubber surround.

The CA22RNY isn't readily available but can be ordered. It has a much bigger magnet then the RNX, and will work in 1ft3 ported (like the JIV cabinet). Nice roll off, about 92 db efficient. The tweeter is rated at 90, but I think with baffle step it should be good, maybe no resistance needed.

I really like the idea that I can fit these in without cutting and ruining the cabinets. I can just reverse the process at any point. Here is the Seas CA22RNY: http://www.seas.no/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=173&Itemid=165

The higher Fs doesn't bother me. However, I'll have to rethink it anyway----The flange on the snell woofers is 215mm, so the others wont fit after all :(

I guess I like the idea of a simple 2 way floor-stander, that goes much lower then most bookshelf speakers. The cost of those drivers is not outrageous - I like the price. A big-box two way is a classic design, which is fine with me. Foam would be even more classic, and the sound would be different-hard to come by these days but I guess all the rot has led folks away.

If the ring fits. You can roto file the opening. As long as you have enough to screw the ring down. Just do 1/16th of an inch with the dremel. It isn't a hard job. Just do a little at a time. I don't know how fast the Seas tweets are. I like the morels. The only tweeter I use I like it so much. Were your 33 a patched pair. Can you send dimensions. What xover are they using? Go to GR research. I'm going shopping. Danny will help if you buy from him. Fill all screw holes when you pull them. Do you need gasket? If vented you can go with a smaller box. I like woofers that push air. I always built sealed boxes. Hate tuning a vent. You don't want them the Morels I can put them to good use. LOL

I'm off to work. The morels were match tweets and about 15yrs old. They are fine. There are still replacement dome/coil for them. You might get them =)

I'm thinking of building a speaker now from the ground up. So then we can chose anything now.

I have designed some killer 2 ways. Bi-wire. 2nd order. You can build a killer 2 way for about 500.00 or less. I would use Goertz ribbon wiring inside. It sound so nice. I would do a 10 inch though. xover point woofer will go to 2000 and tweeter 1500. I would xover right in between. so as to give a mid sound. Air inductors or ribbons. If you really want to step up use PIO caps or SIO. I can guarantee you will be blown away. You would have about 500.00 in them everything included and it will blow your mind. I don't like stiff woofers. I want them moving air.

The matched 33s were not cheap. I think I use to get the 30s for 35 each. I have an acct at PE. Get as much stuff as you need. If you want I can build them for you. I'll check with Danny today. On the woofer have to pick carefully. You don't want stiff and you don't want sloppy. LOL Do you still have your speaker building programs. Why not try an open baffle?

http://gr-research.com/norez24x27sheet.aspx Use this instead of fill. I would also do them in 1 inch MDF especially on the front baffle. No pots, circuit beakers, switches. If you build the box you can build it to the woofer. There are some high wattage and good SPLs. I'm in the stone age right now. I get a thought and I forget to type it. LOL Gotta love it. Its Greeeeaaat

Want to see my picks for a 2 way? It may take me a bit to show them and price them. I love doing this. The reward is the sound. You design a speaker. I don't know where my design note books are. All PE because of my discount. How much you want to spend. PTP wiring. No PCB. Use mdf. Every thing is glued down with clear rtv. That way it isolates the component from the box. You can RTV the corners also. Just thoughts.

Thanks. Larry there is a seas 10" which is the modern version of the Dynaco 25. The woofer is said to actually work with no crossover whatsoever. Good for a guy like me:rr:

http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.co...prestige-a26re4-h1411-10-paper-cone/?mobile=0

I used CALSOD for the crossover optimization and speaker workshop to some extent in the past. Have Vance Dickisons book which is good info.
I don't mind help, but I would like to do as much as I can for some level of satisfaction. Building the cabs is a challange but there are a bunch of local carpenters here.

Larry, yes please share pics!

I used 1" MDF on the morels, 2" on the front lol (and braced). Seems like overkill but when you ramped up the volume with a decent size amp, the sound is much more stable. I know you asked about the crossover, right now there is none. I had designed and built one but it was trash. Tore it apart and used just a cap on the tweet up high. That plus tone controls is how I thought it was promising. The 6" is in about a 9L stuffed cab, so really it acts only as a MID, but damn it would take an Adcom 200wpc. I have some 10" HiVi woofers still in original boxes from around the same time, 3-4" voice coils, long throw. Originally, I thought I would make a 3-way. However, the woofers were spec'd out for 1.5 cuft, but they were WAY off. They need like 3-4 cuft and a big port.

Jeez, do you think I should go back and finish these?!?

I suppose for simplicity I could just make a test enclosure for the 10's and set the Morel "head's" on top?

Look at the Dayton I posted. That thing rocked my store. I was very surprised at the sound. If it didn't sound good it came out. I would never sell to a customer what I wouldn't use. They would eat the costs any way. LOL
