For me it's that yearning for experience that does me in...

throw in a couple pair of rack handles and we are closer to working a deal...

Still tryin for those handles eh? A couple pairs? Oooooo now your making me grit my teeth. Considering I am getting flak for having my basement look like a bomb went off in an electronics store... I am tempted to just send the dang thing off to you to fix and test; just so I can put this stuff back. But once the handles are gone, they're gone. Did Ed ever find any from the old factory that made them in England? Or someone who has spares? I assume not?

let us see if moving the WOA white chassis ground, from the speaker terminals, to the star ground doesn't clear things up. Also snipping that wire over at the normal mode switch? And still......waiting for a clear answer as to add those 220k resistors on the RCA floating bar like Joe's picture shows. And then......even that; i am still faced with Mika's work? Ugh....... Now where did I put those handles........................

Ed did track down the original vendor in England and they are out of business, BUT he said there is probably an entire suburb in London where you walk into a house and every cabinet, drawer, closet door, vanity cover and window has a PL 700 rack handle...

I heard an urban myth, could not track down the source, that said there is still, somewhere in Washington, brand new, still in the blister packs 700B rack handles. No amount of money can buy them, but certain situations can shake a pair loose. Don't know what those situations would be, but I've heard it's true......

Mila's work was a different value cap or two and the different emitter resistor value. Not that much to change really....

Blister packs? That sounds like an optional add on you could buy off the rack at your local stereo shop? I thought handles were standard issue for the 700B? I would only see that making sense if it came from the factory with only bolts. Sounds like bigfoot to me?? Hmmmmmm....

Factory replacement part, the plot thickens.......
Is it myth?...Or legend? Who can say for sure? Next...on Myth-Busters! I know when I buy something new; say like a car..the first thing I think of is "what would be the first little thing to loose or break on this thing that destroys it's appearance"? So next, I purchase a spare cup holder, or steering wheel controls or shifter knob whatever. Ten/twenty years later, I just KNOW I'll have to replace it. And you won't be able to get them new anymore. If I had been in a shop that sold those B's, that's the first thing I would have done. (Along with some knobs :p)

Anyway, I found out I do NOT have to work on Saturday. So I will try to fix that star ground issue FIRST. If that doesn't cut it; I am putting my system back together so I can get this place cleaned up, and using my spare 700B as a temporary fill in. Meanwhile; I will see if we can barter or something.

And I think I will start a new thread. We are WAY past Bulk capacitor replacement procedures. Sooooooo how about "Daves PL 700B Project". "Or Phase Phanatics PL Problems"? LOL! We'll see.....................:confused3:

Hi Dave
Are you still waiting on an answer from me on the 220K resistors? I am pretty sure that I sent you a set of photographs on how to wire up that corner of the amp.

Here is Ed's answer---=----
Lee,

Yeah I just saw Phase Linear Phanatics pictures and instantly recognized the modifications that were performed by Mila Nestorovic while he worked at Phase Linear. (See attached photo). Mila was a friend of A.P. Van Meters. They both worked together at McIntosh in the early 1960's. A.P. helped get him the job at Phase Linear. Mila had several speaker patents that Bob Carver intended to use at Phase Linear but the details couldn't be worked out. From what Dean tells me Mila's mods were only used for a month or two on some 700B's and Phase Linear eventually returned to their original design. Apparently the mods must not have been reliable enough
Here is a picture taken a number of years ago.
NOTE: This photo was obtained from Roger Russell's web site.

From left to right are Dave O'Brien, Mila Nestorovic and A. P. Van Meter.
(They all worked together at McIntosh in the 1960's.)

Dave O'Brien was well know for conducting the McIntosh clinics. In particular for Phase Linear fans would be the McIntosh clinics Bob Carver attended with his "coffee can" amp.

David H. O'Brien passed away on January 9, 2007.
Mioljub (Mila) Nestorovic passed away on May 1, 2009.

Dave O'Brien used to spend 1 week each year around Thanksgiving at A.P.'s house. I had the opportunity to meet Dave on several occasions over the years at A.P.'s house.
