Buildng speakers

For the Carys I'm thinking of building and designing a pair of speakers.. They will be floor standing towers. The tweeters will be Morels for sure. Does any one want to do some shopping for drivers. Give me some suggestions. I'll probably go with 1 inch MDF with either a Burly Maple veneer or Rose wood. I may get in touch with Danny Ritchy to help do the design.

btw, a Polkie got gifted some Tannoy's recently, they were too big for his house, so he pulled the drivers, guess what they were? ..... Freakin' pair of these, http://cgi.ebay.com/TANNOY-SILVER-LSU-H ... 45fb97003f

They run beautifully on tubes , I'll tell you what I told him, talk to some of the cabinet pros over at AK, they have all the know-how for just about any speaker you're going to use. And not just punching the driver info in a computer, that rarely works. you need some serious experience with speaker building if you want them to sound great, not just OK...

This sounds like a fun project Larry, I'll help where I can. Tho I think you should seriously look at eletrostat panels or some ribbons for the mids and highs, no crossovers to muck things up in that ear sensitive range. Just my 2 nickels

Basically a line array without multiple drivers, wires and crossovers. Ask Danny about his thoughts on that.

Stuwee when I started designing and building speakers. I never used a computer. I did it all long hand. Would take me awhile to figure out every thing; But I love the morel tweeters. They are so fast and smooth . Woofers I look at alot of things. I don't know if I would use a program or not. I was pretty good at picking my drivers. It has been awhile; but I think I could do it again.

Well I'M designing speakers with leftovers and a seriously weak Black and Decker drill.

Using a wet noodle is geek overkill.

Steven I don't have any left overs. I use to; but not any more. I talked to Danny he said the line arrays are killer. Right now I don't know. I just shipped one order out to be loaded. My money is all tied up.

I had a complete pair of Pioneer CS-A31s, nius the cabinets and now I'll have a pair of CS-A31's and all that MINUS a horn!

I almost have a house again too! My new shed has a floor covering to protect the wood from the bikes and vice versa. It's almost like a room to my house!

I find the parts I really like and use them. Fancy or not I get what I want and learn.

Any way you can get to a great speaker is fine.

Seas makes a wonderful tweeter, as does Hiqquphon, and Scan speak. Again Zaph audio has done tons of testing on tweeters, and has all the frequency response graphs, distortion graphs and data available at his site. You may want to look at his mismash of tweeters before you buy unless you've already got the Morels in stock...of course Morels are great tweeters too..
