...for cds. I went down to Colorado Springs and hit a couple record stores. The big store there is Independent Records. They are a locally owned chain with a number of stores (including one in Denver). A few years ago they started mixing used cds in with the new (which I really hated). Well imagine my shock to now see very few new cds in the racks. Most of the racks were filled in with used discs. The flagship store has 3 buildings. The building across the street has been empty for a number of years. Not anymore. They have now turned it into The Indispensary (as in medical marijuana). I guess they saw the writing on the wall and decided to give up on cds and bet on the weed. They also mixed the new vinyl in with their mostly beat up used lps. They still have a large section of porno movies so those must still be making money for them. I really hate to see the emphasis move from music to other things. Bummer!

Best Buy and such has not had much in the way of CD's now for over a year, mp3's (yuck) are the way of the children, or whatever form they are saving them as in their iPhones.

Fortunately for me their is a limited amount of new music that I am interested in and am able to either ebay or Amazon it so far, but alas as you are saying, they will too soon be without cd's. A lot of the old school musicians are releasing on vinyl again, it is pricey now though.

CDs are the new dinosaurs, everything is downloadable and stored on chips, I don't care for that at all. I love playing Lps, the whole tactile process, since I got the Onix, I even enjoy CDs too.

Hooking the laptop to the stereo and pushing some buttons isn't as much fun

(warning, easily offended.. don't read.. half truth, half ebil sarcasm implied)

Booo Hisssss :bootyshake:

I don't care much for lossless codecs such as mp3, but there are several outlets that do sell high quality (as in 96K, twice the normal CD) lossless files, legitimately and right from the masters. I used to have tons of CD's and LP's for that matter - and yeah I guess I coulda taken better care, but heck... anywhoo - scratched in the car (I value my life as in not getting into an accident rather than trying to get the jewel cases apart while driving).. oops.. scratched again here and there. Gotta get a new one.. etc.. bah...

Now every CD I have is ripped and upsampled to 24 bit/48K (minimum) lossless, playing through what you'd consider the equivalent of a DAC with a 124db SNR and .0003 THD (count'em.. 3 zeros...) quality sound. Ahh, but it's not just a DAC either.... going the other way, I can "record" with a 118db SNR and .0002 THD, and with a frequency response of <10 to 90K (if I was a dog, I might care about it being that high).

Did I get all this "cheaply"?? No... I paid 4 times the normal consumer would, but compared to the "analog equivalent".. I think I made the smart choice. Please send me a Nak Dragon or a umpty-humpty worth-its-weight-in-gold turntable with the appropriate "software" (I promise I won't scratch it) so I can prove the point... at least to me... :thumbright:

Finally, don't take this as a way to group meself personally in with all the other "wannemnow younger crowd" with their ipods and whatnot. This "trip down the digital road" started for me a lot earlier than most, when a good 17 years ago I experimented with some of the old Sound Blaster hardware and software (Sound Ole', anyone?), battling IRQ's and having to deal with 100MB hard drives (I could count how many songs I could "fit" and still not run out of fingers on one hand). I owned "EZ CD-DA Extractor" when it was still beta (it's now on version 16). It used to take me just as long to listen to a CD as it did to rip it.

Signed, Digital Heretic "Jer"...

(now who's gonna ship me a dragon, onix, or whatever to "sway" me... heheheh)

AS I told you in another thread it still melts my ear wax.

You still go analog at some point. It just adds another form of input. Which to me is no big deal. I'm not the type that has to handle things. What is cheap? If you are in this thing audio there is no cheap path. You can pay it now or pay it later.

True Larrt, but once fidelity is lost along that chain, nothing coming after it can fix it. that's why i agree with you on the source, it all starts there.

I like records, CD's, FLAC's and even the occasional cassette.

I'll start messing with HiRez when I get a better sound card and/or something that will play DVD-A....

Well sorta. I do build my base system 1st. It is the sum of all parts. I know what I want next. There are some wires I want. 10 pair my cost is over 1500.00. Nice ICs though. MSRP is around 5000.00 for 10 pr.

Barnes + Noble's cd section is rapidly shrinking too. Went to Angelo's (1 of the few stores in Denver that still has an extensive selection of new cds) on Friday. Picked up the Deluxe Edition (4 extra songs) of the new Lynyrd Skynyrd and the new Los Straitjackets on cd. I'm sad to see cds being phased out. Downloads just aren't much fun for me. I want a physical copy. Now is the time to snap up what you want on cd while it's cheap and not the hot, trendy thing.

I'm not doubting ya buddy, we all hear things a certain way, sometimes other factors come into play,,,I'm nit picking here...afraid that the digital will one day surpass my beloved analog sound, the pine'ns of an old man :tard:
Yeah I agree with ya there, Bro. I think tho it all depends on the original master's and how it was engineered. The dudes nowadays (those who shun the "loudness wars", few and far between as they are) have a good 30 or so years of knowing what sounds good in the digital realm versus what doesn't, and it does show in some of the recent recordings where (again) the tracks were engineered by someone who gave a hoot. The recent Donald Fagen/Steely Dan tracks are a good example of that.

I got two "decent" sound cards just sitting 'round here. An M-Audio PCI and I think an EMU 0404 PCIx. While you'll pry my Xonar from my "cold dead hands", anyone who dares to take the challenge (and those who haven't yet got 'er all done.. lookin over yonder at the Lee-dude heheh) feel free to contact me. I'll send one of 'em to yas plus a few samplers to listen to. Anyone?

I feel so out of touch, I have no idea what you're talkin' 'bout, I know what I hear, and I can't go to those levels in my little apt. I fell you need to feel it to make it really happen (this is true in many aspects in life :laughing4:) . I'm starting to sound like Lee dishing out Mach 8 :blob4::blob4:
