Screw it
I had a request for a remote volume kit to be installed into a Carver 4000t. Had not seen it done before so I had to do some testing to see if the power supply would handle the extra 100ma draw on the +12vdc.... Another site had said the voltage dipped when cycling the volume up or down. I didn't see anything like that but I tested for a couple days including the points where the volume was all the way up (continually holding the button at the stops for extended amounts of time) or down. I took temperature reading of the +12vdc regulator and only got a few degrees above the quiescent temperatures. So, it looks like it will be a go. I also beefed up the power supply board and double heat sinked the regulator. I had to hunt and dig to find a 20K motorized (double ganged) pot but managed to find some. The Power Supply board was completely rebuilt with new unstressed components and I went a few sizes up un the bulk caps (not very bulky compared to WOPL caps. The IR receiver will be fun as I refused my customers request to put it in the face plate. I was not about to drill into hard to find preamps... So, I'll use a bomber volume knob and experiment with that. That's how the did it on the CT-17 and numerous other pre's.......
Here you'll see I'm pulling +12vdc off the power supply board for testing. And I am monitoring the voltage and temp. One shot is of the double sinked +12 Reg......

Perry ,
tell me why you don't use a " ready to run" external remote volume control with box and power supply
connected at the output of the preamp ?
Price is about 60€ and it's very easy to hide it and locate the sensor on the lateral side of the cabinet.

I do agree with you that I have paid a lot for RC 4136 N adapter ,
but my diagnosis was incorrect and furthermore I'm " almost blind " ( two diopsters ) .
Now it's very hard for me to do " invasive" modifications or solder in SMT .
Not only I 'm a system engineer and I am used to study and work on the interfaces .
In other words I consider hifi gears as black boxes .
When I was young I was a designer ( telecom devices)

PS: Fortunately a my close friend wants the adapter and I will sell him for 15/20€

Surface mounts

RC4136 upgrades on a Brown Dog adaptor... I need to change tips, still just a bit heavy on the solder but these will function. Just need to clean them a little more. Surface mount on fine pitch is a challenge for the old peepers, especially when you are used to doing it under the microscope. I'm doing the Mini-Wave technique, still too big of a tip.

12 down, 40 to go.

Congrats Perry !

PS: now for me it's better PTH .

Had to get a 1/64 tip for my WES 51 before I tried some surface mount. Looks like you're getting it figured out...

I'd love to have one (or two). I just had to fix my back up station. It's lived a long hard life. Luckily my weller station is bullet proof. Tips are expensive too.

Amen , my WES 51 just keeps on ticking and tips are only 3 bucks or there abouts. Now that the local electronics storte closed I'll have to order those too. It was nice just to jump in the truck and go buy one when ya needed one.
