Ok folks, we are going to come up with some standard testing and procedures for the WOPL's. ED and I have been talking about it for awhile, so how about your input?

That's a great idea guys. Something along the lines of testing individual components such as the bipolar junction transistors to frequency response. I'm liking this.

Mainly testing the performance specs, but the transistor testing ain't a bad idea....

I got an idea in addition to the original 74 ftc rule(s) why not take a page from car audio amp and deck/seting amp gain testing turn it up till it clips and slowly lower it till it is clean
example cliping @ 60 volts clean @ 59 volts then test at various frequencys and ohm loads

also a SMD AD-1 amp dyno would be cool

A test plan and a test procedure. The plan outlines the equipment and setup required to perform the procedure. Like scope, signal generator, loads, required grounding, special setup etc. The procedure then details the tests.

And that fine sir is what Ed excels at. He wrote a lot of calibration procedures for Boeing and NIST....

I do what the P/L manual says. I'm not as concerned with distortion, S/N as I am with load sharing, offset, and short circuit testing. I also check ripple voltage on the DC caps at 8 ohms/clipping.

Anybody thats afraid to do the short circuit test probably took short cuts along the way.

Unfortunately I never worked for N.I.S.T. I do have a number of friends who do work there. By the way, N.I.S.T. doesn't write full blown calibration procedures per say. They do have standard operating procedures, good laboratory practices, good measurement practices, etc.

Define: Phase Linear 700, 700B, 700 II and PRO 700 Specifications and Tolerances

Lee,

Before we can proceed with a calibration procedure we as a community need to define any additional specifications and tolerances we might want to include.

Most of what you will see in my rough draft (of specifications and tolerances) was taken from Phase Linear's manufacturer's specifications: 700, 700B, 700 II and PRO 700 owner's manuals, services manuals and sales brochures. In some cases there is a discrepancy in the specifications.

Additionally, I added a few more things we may want to consider (i.e. channel separation/crosstalk, etc).

So I began a checklist on the first (2) pages (see attached document) which will eventually correlate to steps in the calibration procedure. Once someone is familiar with all of the steps you can just jump to the checklist in the back of the procedure. NOTE: The Navy NAVAIR calibration procedures often have a checklist in the back of them. Using the checklist and recording the data will also be helpful in evaluating differences between PC boards, etc.

I think before we go to far we need to define the scope of work. It appears to me we need two documents. One covers the basics that a user with limited means could accomplish. The second can be unlimited in its scope.
